That bugs me as well. I believe that proper grammar is very important, and I tend to think less of people who appear illiterate.

Proper grammar is important if you want to be taken seriously. It also helps to get your point in clearly.I can take a little bit of relaxation on the grammar but when they mess with grammar spelling and anything they can think of to make their post look strange ( CHk iT oUt dudz, i UpdAted mah sTAtuS n stufF) i tend to stop reading and reply with the sole intention of spiting them.

I say that proper grammar is important. If we don't use it, we might just end up like the the people in Idiocracy.

I try to type grammatically accepted sentences because it doesn't make me look like an illiterate buffoon. I sometimes type acronyms like "lol" or "lmfao" just because it's the Internet. But I can't stand it when ppl strt typn lyk diz u no wht i mn? It's lazy. :(

Proper grammar is very important when it comes to getting your point through. If someone's grammar is wrong, people can easily mistake it for something else.

I think most of the people who do not use proper grammar on social networking sites seem to do so because they are talking to their friends. If you talk to your friends in your usual manner they will usually respond, often favourably, even if you objectively sound retarded. They are already used to it, after all.If you want something more than that, though, you should use proper grammar. As noted already in this thread (and frequently elsewhere): It makes your points clearer, makes them look better, makes you look less incredibly lazy, and makes you look less stupid.

Proper grammar must always be implemented. Unfortunately, most of the people I know who type Th!$ W@y is very poor in class. I hope they realize that typing in Th!$ manner will only worsen their case of being illiterate.

Okay Proper Grammer is obscenely important. I can understand if you're on Skype, or Yahoo, and relax just a little bit. Even though I do slack on that (for example: not capitalizing proper nouns, beginnings of sentances, etc) I try to make it comprehensable. If not, it is a lost cause. On Facebook (when i feel like going on) I caplitalize everything, spell check everything, and use proper punctuation. The one thing I won't do this on, is when I am doing a serious prose, for a fanfic, or non-fic story. This ruins everything big time.

The lack of care for proper grammar in social networking sites is really quite annoying and is starting to make me irrationally angry.

I only consider grammar when doing professional things. Otherwise, I couldn't really care. Some people don't know proper grammar, but I learned early from reading books.

Oh, an addendum to my previous post: Proper grammar is also important when you are trying to criticise people on their bad grammar. Otherwise you just look stupid.Seriously I have this urge to copyedit every post in here right now.

I think it depends on the situation. I personally am so used to good grammar that it seems awkward for me not to use it. Normally, the reason people type badly is to shorten the number of characters in a limited message. But, if they're only typing badly because they're lazy or they think it looks cool, it can be really annoying and painful to the eyes. it also causes the typist to appear super immature. I really hate not being able to fix people's spelling and grammar errors on social networking sites like facebook.

Proper grammar must always be implemented. Unfortunately, most of the people I know who type Th!$ W@y is very poor in class. I hope they realize that typing in Th!$ manner will only worsen their case of being illiterate.

On the subject of grammar, I believe it would be 'people I know who type Th!$ W@y are doing very poorly in class'

Definitely not, as long as it's legible and you can understand what the person is trying to say. I like the abbreviations, you shouldn't feed the need to have proper punctuation for everything you type on the internet.

My spelling is horrible but I agree that people should use better grammar than "text talk".

I think that proper grammar should definitely be taken into consideration even on social networking sites but I think that using short-forms just for the sake of keeping things short and sweet is fine as long as one can still comprehend what the other is trying to say...

Sadly, there is much more to being literate, than being able to make out the letters and reading them out loud. People who resort to crude shortcuts like substituting "u" for "you" or "LOL" for actually articulating "I thought this was really funny!" are revealing that they don't actually care what they say, and that, if they lost the ability to speak, the world wouldn't suffer too much. I am cautious when it comes to language, because the way we speak (or write, in this case) affects the way we think, and I pity the world at that moment when the most powerful person on earth sees a nuclear attack commence on his country and all they can think is "OMG WTF y iz u attekking me???!!!1!!1!"...

I think its all about balance, not completely go to the "1337 t4lk", but not be complete Grammar Nazis either, as long as as you don't completely speak in a punctuation less mish mesh of words that not even you can read after. To be honest, I don't really have a huge problem with punctuation, and I try to type as "proper" as possible, but will also abbreviate words here and there, just because. But overall I think people shouldn't worry "Too much" just try and make sense and people won't really mind much.

Obviously it's important! People who don't use full sentences have no respect for the English language at all; it's like misusing it. If your English is seriously not that good then at least use proper sentences so people can at least try to interpret it. I have no problems reading SMS-talk, but what about people who can't read things like brb, l8r, gtg, rofl? In a text message, short form is acceptable(because of limited word count) but not for social networking websites like Facebook. It just sends off a message that "Hey, I don't like to write properly!"

It's important that people know how to spell, it annoys me to no end when people don't use proper grammar. I make my little typo's but I always correct them. I can't even really force myself to type in such a horrid manner.

I agree with all of you saying proper grammer is important, but somtimes when I see people talking 1337speech online it dosn't really bother me. We don't talk formally to our freinds and online using poper grammer all the time is just too formal. I assume the individuals who use 1337 speech know better than to talk like that during formal matters.

It really doesn't take too much more time to do it right. Chrome also corrects your spelling errors so its even easier to be correct.
