You might have him check out Dragon Quest Monsters Joker and Joker 2.
They are very similar to Pokemon and even have full 3D graphics and
environments. Also the art and character design are done by Akira Toriyama so the whole game kinda looks like an episode of DBZ.
Adventure Time is very popular right now and they just came out with a great game for DS and 3DS called Adventure Time - Hey Ice King! Why'd You Steal Our Garbage!??. Its a great platformer that's a little on the easy side so it's a pretty good choice for kids.
Also he could try Crystal Monsters (It's a DSIWare download game for 5 bucks) It's a pretty decent Pokemon rip off and for the price I think it's a good deal.
I'm not much of a sports game fan but I've read that Pro Evolution Soccer 2013 for 3DS is pretty good. (If your son has a 3DS)
Again if he has a 3DS you could download (from the E-Shop) ARC Style: Soccer 3D. It's a fully customizable soccer game.
Also consider Digimon Word DS , Digimon Dusk , and Digimon Dawn all for DS .
death doesn't just border on insanity, it
wallows in it.

Does he have Pokemon Mystery Dungeon? That's a good one.
In addition, I recommend classics such as Mario Kart DS. Also, try something like Mario and Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story.
Brain Age is also fun, and good for your mind, too.
