They are mostly cutscenes, and barely games.

Willow for the NES actually did incredibly well for being based off of a movie... The engine itself was relatively unique at the time as action/RPG's weren't as common as they are today.

I'd say they suck cuz they want to keep the game to the storyline of the movie... but movies aren't designed to be good games =p

I think it's mostly because you know what will happen in the end.

I'd say usually because they're made so quickly to coincide with the movie that it's near impossible to get anything of worth.. as listed, many of them just rip off existing games.Of course, there are exceptions, as listed above. You can just about bet that any GBA game based on a movie is going to suck. A lot. Like a hole in the side of a spaceship cruisin' through deep space. :)

Aladdin was a pretty good video game...Anyway, I think it's the same reason why most movies based on books aren't good, or most movies based on video games aren't good... when someone else is trying to interpret the story their own way and re-create the original world, a lot of meaning is lost and it just isn't the same in its new form.

I agree with both #2 and #4. When it comes down to it, a lot of games based on movies suck. I think they try to make it so much like the movie that there isn't anything original to do. You already know how it'll play out. And I am sure they are hoping to make a quick buck because if the movie is popular, they think people will buy the game because they loved the movie. although you always end up with the games that put in too many scenes from the movies like LoTR and Star Wars. Just like they say, "If I wanted to watch the movie, I'd buy the movie!" But then I also agree with Teck about how games make bad movies. For example, take Bloodrayne. That lasted about a week. And now the Dead or Alive is out. It doesn't look very good, but I might watch it anyway because I love DoA. so when i do see it, I'll probably say, "Well, this movie sucked."

I think most game movies are bad because the director decides to take his own artistic view of what he thinks the story should be rather than taking the perfectly good story that teams of writers spent months on and using that. Best example - Resident Evil.

That's not a true statement. Not all games based on movies suck. Sometimes they are exactly the same.IE: Lord of the rings trilogy movie. The games for PS2 weren't that bad at all. In fact they were pretty cool.

They suck 'cause game developer don't have as much time to make the game. The game needs to be in sync with the release. If they start developing early then we could know about a upcoming movie.

Depends on gameplay and relativeness to the movie itself but I hate this trend of profiting. A game I found good was LotR, and creating a movie out of a game is a different and sad story.

A lot of them suck due to time constraints, a lot of time a movie based game is in development for a much shorter time then the movie it's self when really the game should have to take longer to make. Also the producers of the film or the people putting up the money for the film are the ones that make the call for a game to be made off of the film, not all the time but a lot of the time these people know a lot about business and the film industry, but not much about games, or game design. They look at it as a cash in point, farm out a bare bones beat em up to a cheap experienced development house (cost less) for our summer action blockbuster, turn it out and over in less then 6 months, and bingo you have the "Watchmen" game, or the new "Kick Ass" movie game. Make the game in no time, for real cheep = quick buck and poor game. With the hard core fan base both them two comics turn'd movies have, there really was no reason why thous games should have not had the time taken with them to make them deep and rich experiences to match the story's.

for the games that actually try to follow a movies story (you know, like how mario bros didn't) the problem there lies in the story being very limited by the movie already, and restricting the creativity allowed by games.
