Im a huge fan of the Resident Evil games. I played from 2 to 5 and 0 (never got to play the first one) and i noticed something. The game creators of the RE games are slacking. a lot. I decided to replay RE2 and while i was playing i noticed i got startled more in this game than i did from the current RE games. Not only this one but RE3 too. I just feel like they games got less scary as each one came out. Do you agree or disagree?

The direction of the first few games (Zero - Code Veronica) were fairly strong on the puzzle elements. 4 + 5 have been strongly assumed to be action heavy in contrast, focusing more in combat gameplay. You'll notice that with melee moves, the knife being largely more effective, and the generally ease of maneuverability, that combat is a lot easier. I think the behind the shoulder view has a lot to answer for this. I recently played the Lost in Nightmares Re5 bonus on my Gold Edition. If you inspect the door at the beginning three times, it changes from the dynamic behind the shoulder view, to fixed camera view of older titles. I found that while nostalgic, it was a **** lot harder to play that way. But that's just combat wise. You'd think that, by allowing a dynamic camera, they'd make more intricate puzzles, but goddamn that's not the case (and probably the only real case where 4-5 have been slacking, minus plot). The scare factor diminishing can be any number of things, but without pulling the age card:* Obviously, the first one you play (regardless of order) is going to be the scariest. It's probably going to be considerably less with each consecutive title. * Camera angle. It's what separates the scare factor between the earlier titles and 4+5. Think of it this way: Back into the corner with rather terrible aiming and low ammo, with a thing slowly coming to you, every step is a step closer to death... or, coming at you like a hillbilly with a bottle, and who cares about ammo, you have a knife and a friggin' roundhouse/straight... or my personal favourite, the Stun Rod. * The Ganado/Majini have a domesticated feel to them. Much less scary than rampant, unco-operative flesh eaters.

Should I feel bad if I want everything to become ice cream?

im not complaining so much about the combat, difficulty of the puzzles (although they could be a little bit harder) or the camera angle but the element of surprise during the game. In 4 and 5 there are somethings you see coming that would be better hidden from the player. Like in 2 walking through a hallway in the police department zombie hands would pop out from the window and try to grab you. Something a player might not see coming. Know what i mean? And personally if the reason for the scare factor is the domesticated enemies you encounter i think they should go back to the regular flesh eating zombies.

Yeah, I get what you mean. I still think that the camera angle, puzzles and combat still all have minor effects to any surprise, especially the camera angle. Because the camera is not fixed, you can track enemy movement, and so you can't have something like a cutscene showing you that you are not alone, and that you have to deal with not being able to see it (but it's still there). Well, I guess I should be happy that Revelations is trying to be like RE4/5 but with the goodness from the earlier titles that 4/5 didn't have. With formless blobs with claws attacking around every corner, and aquatic battles (yes.... oh wait, it's not MH, NOOOOOOOOOOOOO! DO NOT WANT!), it should redeem the core fans (or whatever those nubs want to call themselves).

i know the camera, puzzles and all that have no significant effect to any surprise or the scares i just want that little scare when i turn that one corner. and i know there going to keep using the game camera from 4+5 cause it more convenient to the player. right now im hoping that operation raccoon city (ps3 & 360) will be like how 2+3 was in terms of monsters and difficulty. im not that much of a ds fan so let me know how the game turns out.

I actually agree. I noticed this after you pointed it out, then I went back and played RE2 then RE5. RE5 was a lot more predictable and a lot less about survival rather than shooting all your enemies in the face. Have you noticed that Chris and Leon are the only two RE characters that haven't teamed up yet?

When it comes to the Resident Evil games. Over the run of the series, I feel that it has gotten away from what made it a hit to begin with. The flesh eating Zombies, the puzzles and not knowing what was around every corner. One of the best RE games that i feel was made that made for the great game play was Nemesis. The reason this one was such a huge hit was the fact that you knew the big boss Nemesis was in the game. But if there was one thing that you did not understand or know when he was going to come at you.. You could be with the weakest weapons in the game. The next thing you knew he was almost on top of you. So you could either try and fight him, or run to get away from him... It is that kind of unpredicablity that made the Resident Evil games what it was. When they went to more puzzles and more less of being able to figure out the game in the first 5 minutes of play, then it lost the luster of the first two games. To figure out to have to always move your eyes across the screen looking for something that might or might not be there. To be in the moment of the game, not to be there to just play and be done in about a couple of hours. But to play for serveral days, learning where everything was and to get jumped out of the middle of no where.

the original trilogy are one of the best survival horror games i've ever played. 2 game cube titles are also good and code veronica for dreamcast. the other is just crap, and it's getting worse with every game...
