Okay, I know some of you may already be aware of SOPA and I don't have to tell you what could happen if it passes. Well, if it passes, not will this wonderful site be screwed, the internet as we know it could be ruined! SOPA would make it illegal to upload ANY copyrighted works! Not just roms and music, but even pics or fan art of game characters! It would even make it illegal to post vids of speed runs, wlakthroughs, let's plays or even a funny glitch in a game! SOPA is going to be voted on THIS Wednesday! Help me spread the word and fight SOPA! (This video si me trying to explain what SOPA is and what it will do). http://act.demandpro...JTkqV4&rd=1&t=2 (This is the petition that you should sign to help fight SOPA). https://writerep.hou...p/welcome.shtml (If you'd like to personaly contact your congressperson about this, this site will help you). (More expanation on SOPA.)

As if blocking a few domain names will stop piracy. Sure, It'll make it a bit harder and all the lazy people might stop illegal downloading but it won't stop us.There are just so many ways to pirate on the internet that it's just not possible to stop it. So i'll see this more as a deterrent than anything else (@Cougar: But that's in the SC. :weep: )

It doesn't matter. This topic is fine. The SC is great but you can't discuss anything without going off topic eventually.

Okay, I know some of you may already be aware of SOPA and I don't have to tell you what could happen if it passes. Well, if it passes, not will this wonderful site be screwed, the internet as we know it could be ruined!

As of now, this site is perfectly legal. But this could be a real problem:

Depending on who requests the court orders, the actions could include barring online advertising networks and payment facilitators such as PayPal from doing business with the allegedly infringing website, barring search engines from linking to such sites, and requiring Internet service providers to block access to such sites.

The donations are what keep the site alive. If those get blocked, Then we're quite screwed. As for blocking, I'm sure people will find a way to get around it. Fan art illegal- That would suck :weep:

SOPA would make it illegal to upload ANY copyrighted works! Not just roms and music, but even pics or fan art of game characters! It would even make it illegal to post vids of speed runs, wlakthroughs, let's plays or even a funny glitch in a game!

You think it'll go that far? That'd be pretty silly. If there's anything that convinces me to get a game, It's user reviews and clips of them playing. Also,

The bill also gives immunity to Internet services that voluntarily take action against websites dedicated to infringement, while making liable for damages any copyright holder who knowingly misrepresents that a website is dedicated to infringement.

Not sure what that means, I guess it means- 'If you get rid of anything copyrighted quickly enough, We won't block you.' Which makes sense.

Cary Sherman, Chairman and CEO of the RIAA wrote in a guest editorial for CNET that the proposed law targeted "only the illegal subdomain or Internet protocol address rather than taking action against the entire domain."

QUIIIIIIICK! Change the forums to 'forums.dgemu.com'I'd still use a proxy :weep: On a lighter note:

"The bill attempts a radical restructuring of the laws governing the Internet,"

lol.

i have a question: assuming i use some clip not just for upload, but also place a rather long comment within the clip (the clips would therefor degenerate to deliverer of the comment). Could the removal be interpreted as denying me my right on free speech?

You think they'll just think about it like normal people, though? These are people who barely understand that the principle of the internet's existence is file-sharing. Everything done over an internet connection is automatically file-sharing. They don't get it. Also, game companies don't have a problem with people uploading "let's plays", but the law won't distinguish the difference between one form of copyrighted material and another. It's like giving someone broad-spectrum antibiotics to "nip it in the bud" for what "someone" considers the greater good.

Not for nothing, but even if they were to pass this bill, so long as you knew the IP address of the site you were looking for, you would have no problem (SOPA/PIPA intends to block it on a DNS level). So just because your computer won't display sites doesn't mean you couldn't manually enter in the actual IP address.

Wikipedia is blacked out today in order to spread awareness about SOPA and PIPA. SOPA was shelved, but it is still a major concern for many people, as the senate is taking a vote on january 24. I'm sure many people already know about this, but many websites would probably be shut down in order to stop copyright infringement and the internet would be censored. We need to stop SOPA, so let the members of Congress know our feelings. https://www.google.c...ing/takeaction/

I live in Canada, and while it seems like many sites are blocked to Americans, I only miss megavideo here.

The thing is, the government already has laws in place to combat online piracy. They just choose not to enforce the laws they already have in place. Then they go and make more restricting laws that basically mean that they're going to censor the internet even more.Essentially, they're just giving themselves more power while the rest of us are forced to adjust to the change. This was really brought on by their own laziness. If they were truly serious about protecting copyrighted material, they would have simply enforced the copyright laws we already have.
