I'm looking to download Kingdom Hearts Re-Coded from this site (when I get enough DPs) and I'd like to know if there's any real difference between the American version and European version. Obviously the Japanese version would have the language. But other than maybe a few translation differences, would one be better to download over the other (European or American)?

The only difference is small translation between European and US. The European version is a multilingual that can be change to the other support languages, which makes the file a little bigger than the US version. Other than that, it is the same game.

I'd like to add some things to that though. Although they are mostly the same games, not all games can be mixed for local multi-player. Sometimes EU and US regions can be mixed, while other times you can't. There is also the case of games that utililize slot-2 functions, regretfully you can't use cartridges from differing regions for these games.

I've never really spotted much of any differences between EU and US versions of DS roms. Occasionally one will have a slightly altered title, and one may use more British english than American english, but aside from that, I've never seen anything different. There is the matter of the whole local multiplayer issue, but, this isn't the case for *all* games that have different country releases. I've had plenty that have worked just fine for both.

Conclusion: mostly the different versions only affect the languages/translations the game has, however there are some games which are affect through censored content and such on different versions.

In general, are the translations coherent? Or are they just slapped together so to speak?

It depends on the translation team and the company, sometimes the translation is spot on, sometimes its incoherent, just like with Japanese to English translations. The English portion of European games however are for most of the time the same deal as the American counterparts.

I've noticed on some games there will be a bug that isn't in the other region. I don't know if that's to do with release dates or what. Besides the Ahmurican vs British english, sometimes there will be a joke that is butchered in the US version but fixed in the EU version.

If you have the hard drive space I'd recommend downloading both versions for a game you like. Then when you do a replay use the other version, if your trying to learn another language this is a bit of a bonus.

I think the US version is often released way before the game is released in Europe (at least this is how it used to be), so traditionally EU versions have some of the US version bugs fixed. As I said, this is how it used to be during the PS2-GC-XBOX-era and earlier. Nowadays things might be a little different. I usually take the EUR version as I don't think it could be any worse.
