I purchase primarily Collectors Edition version of games, not Special Editions. Whether I pre-order a game or not also depends on the pre-order bonuses given. For example even though King of Fighters XIII had no "Collectors Edition", Gamestops pre-order exclusive had a 4 Disc Soundtrack that was well worth pre-ordering the game for. There are some very dissapointing Collector's Editions out there as well, such as the Collector's Edition of SCV, which is a very dissapointing game in general. The people who didn't buy the Collector's Edition of it got the shaft as well, as 80% of the plotline in that game exists solely within the Artbook that came exclusively in the Collector's Edition. I had FFXIII-2 Collector's Edition pre-ordered, but after seeing my friend spend 80 bucks on it and never even play it once, I decided to just not get it, not until I've at least finished FFXIII, which I actually bought the same day I placed my pre-order. I think for me personally it comes down to how pricey a CE is. I won't sit down and pay 150$ for Skyrim's CE or a Star Wars Old Republic CE, especially given that I heavily disliked Oblivion and The Shivering Isles when I had them. I do like Star Wars, and might get that someday when I can afford it. I'm not going to pay 70$ for the regular edition though, not when I know that the price will drop on it eventually. Add onto that the monthly fee, and fact that you have 8 completely different plotlines to play, and at least you know you get enough replay value. I figure once Old Republic hits 99.99$ I'll end up getting it. After all Skyrim's CE already dropped to 99.99$ as of January, at least at my local Gamestop anyways. I actually was about to get the Limited Edition of Darkness II but decided to pass on that in favor of SCV CE, which as I stated above, is very dissapointing. FFXIV is one game I still plan to get the CE of, especially with it having dropped in price down around 30$ now, which is only 10$ more then the regular edition.
