Never get used electronics. Besides, just get a DSi or something because the DS lites are ancient

At this point, go for another one instead of fixing it, if you already haven't.

I mean, there's the DSi, and the 3ds for options too

Well if i were you id just buy either a used ds lite that is in good shape and worth the money or just buy a brand new ds lite and take good care of it so it doesnt get broken again or you could save up your money and buy a new 3ds.

Why must I suffer from posts that make no sense? I do not use a flashcard. The DS Lite is not ancient. Stick to the title of this forum. If it does not relate (or has a price of how much it is) don't bother to post it.

Honestly for anything, normally just repairing it is cheaper, but it will never be the same. If you use your DS a ton and you game with that primarily you should just get a new one!

I would like that I got a USED DS Lite as a reward for getting the best score on a test in a class I am in at my school. (p.s. It is a black DS Lite) I also bought a 3DS when I when to Gamestop on a shopping spree.

You can buy a new/ like new nintendo ds lite on Ebay easily. With 3DS out for so long, the lite has decreased in cost and all it takes is some searching on your own part to find it. I did it, and my ds is extremely well kept.

This topic is old, started in march. My guess is that he/she has decided already. My dslite still works fine, have it for over 5 yrs, only complain is that the gear that rotate when opening and ajusting the top cover isn't working. Now that it the holiday season is here the price of a new dslite has droped since new models are coming out. As for me I think that I will get me a new dsxl $130.00

I have done a repair job on a DS lite before, the top screens ribbon cable was broke and the hinge was broken. so I used a triwing and opened it up, got a new top screen (make sure to note the position of the speaker wires, that is important for sound unless you use headphones.) as for the shoulder buttons that's a solder job, make sure you have a nice small soldering iron that doesn't get extremely hot because for soldering the speaker wires to the ribbon cable of the replacement top screen, to hot will burn the cable, and for the shoulder buttons, it's very small solder points so a small tip is useful. be careful if you do decide to "rebuild" it yourself. Those ribbon cables are very fragile and stuffing it through the hinge lock is not easy. the shoulder buttons though, as long as you get them secured properly and get the plastic external part of the button back in, you shouldn't have much trouble with it.

It's easier than it looks but make sure to take pictures along the way. It's important to be gentle and no to stress any of the internal parts. The DS may be known for being tough, but they are fragile inside.

Oh and as for the battery, just get a replacement. they go bad on occasion and sometimes you can get one from Radio Shack. If not just get it from wherever you get your replacement parts from.

Radio shack is your friend for soldering equipment if you don't already have it.

As for what is cheaper... it's a matter of if you have the equipment to repair or not. If you don't have the equipment you will find that the cost will be higher than getting a used working ds lite, but you will have tools for later projects.

I would like some good news and some bad news. I'll start with the bad news first. I would like to say that the DS Lite with the duct tape on it is currently in a what can put as a "electronic coma" because the battery started to look like it wanted to do what happens when you throw a rechargable battery in a fire. Until the battery is replaced, it will not work. Now, for the good news. Two things I would like to say are that at least I have TWO systems in the DS system line(including the 3DS and 3DS XL) and that the post I wrote before THIS POST was written on my aqua blue 3DS system.

Very interesting, exploded battery. Well a new battery is a dime a dozen for a DS lite if you know where to look. Oh and that post had to take a really long time to type out with that on your 3ds

DS Lites are getting cheaper ... but ... more and more of them are failing on the L and R buttons. This is EASY FIX that I use - first check if the button works, then wrap my ugly lips over the button and breathe in hard. Then check. A few pushes to test. If it doesn't work, sometimes a 2nd breathe-in is needed. This is just like with the old cartridges (Genesis, N64, NES, SNES) ... the moisture makes the contacts work, for a while anyway. The problem with the L and R buttons is just about always there with the older DS Lite's.

Just to let you know, I took apart a DS lite, took out the switch, swapped it for another, put it back together, and ... same problem reappeared a few days later. The soldering was a nightmare, since I don't have the expensive microscopic soldering setup needed for surface-mount electronics. Using a "fine point" soldering iron from Radio Shack was like using a rhinoceros to slip a CD into a PS3. A little big. So then I found out about the breathing thing, and like magic, it worked!

If it was me, I would buy a new one. You never know exactly what you buy when you have a second-hand one. You can buy a good thing but it can always turn out to be crap. So better spend  some more and buy yourself a new. It's always good to spoil yourself now and then too!

Just buy a new one. The broken one is likely to develop more problems along the road. Nothing better than a fresh new console!

The only place to get "new" ds lite is at walmart and I am not spending $99 dollers for a ds lite but, I WILL get my old ds lite working even if it costs me some money.  I am also planning to buy a NEW 3ds (only because I a) do not know how long the black ds lite I got for get the highest score on a quiz and b) the 3ds I currently have I bought used and it only came with the system, a VERY loose stylus, and a charger but, no AR cards.

It will *definitely* be cheaper to fix up your old one. If you do it right. You can get the parts in a number of places (search for: ds lite parts). I've fixed a DS lite with dead shoulders and a white touch screen (i fell asleep on it :( ), and it wasn't too painful. I had another DSL and I just did it for fun, I don't think I would do it if it was my only one. It took me a long time D:.

If it was me in your boots, I'd buy the used DS lite.

They have new DS Lites at your Wal★Mart? The DSi is the oldest thing they have at the walmarts near me. those are 99 bucks

The AR card thing isn't an issue really if you have a smartphone laying around especially an android, there are apps that have the cards stored in them. Of if you have a good printer, you can print some fresh ones. there isn't anything special to the AR cards. the data is all stored in the AR games app on the 3ds so all it needs is an image to load from.
