You could start with any FF game, All are fun to play even the older ones. I prefer playing FF6 or FFVII for starters I think.

Don't start with IV if you're playing on a handheld, unless you want to become sick. Start with Final Fantasy III, because it's fun and it doesn't have that daunting feeling you get in IV. In the end it's up to you.

actually I'm not sure due to Japanese songs sometimes being unrecognisable

this one happens to be one of them songs (blocked why'd no one tell me?) here's a new song

Most final fantasy games are set in their own universe, so you don't have to have played I-III to understand IV. However, IV might stump you a bit, because of the ATB system. Unlike usual RPGs, the battles in final fantasy IV are in real-time (and since then almost every final fantasy game IIRC). This means that enemies might attack you when you are selecting your commands. You can set the wait setting in the option menu, which will at least pause the battle if you go through the spell list. Other than that, IV is a pretty good game and it's not really hard for non-final fantasy gamers, but it does have a few tricks up it's sleeves.

since the final fantasy series don't have a storyline, u can start with whatever final fantasy you want, however, i recommend u to start with final fantasy V, which has a multi-class system in the game much like final fantasy I, and so you can experience the many kind of classes that exist in the fantasy world and to understand some of the speech and characters and enemies that you will find throughout your journey within the storyline, but i don't really recommend u to play final fantasy I and II as first games, because i find them more difficult than the rest,Of course, this is my point of view

All of the FF games in the main series (I, II, III etc.) are standalone and have nothing in common in regards to story, though the basic battle system and many elements remain the same. I suggest 4 or 6 if you want to start :)

This is the handheld section so I assume you're using a GBA emulator as opposed to NES/SNES. The quality GREATLY increases in terms of each release for the older Final Fantasy games so...
Final Fantasy 1 and 2 are prepackaged on the NES.
Final Fantasy 3 on the NES is an overall improvement on 1, Don't know about the DS. (Try using a translation patch on the NES rom if you don't have a DS.)

That's really the best place to start I think. After that I think it becomes more story-based which is also good.

Start with FFI. You can see how the series mechanics developed from then on, even if the FFI for the PSP is modernized, it's still quite similar to the original and gives a good feel for how the series started.

I know a lot of people go on and on about Final Fantasy VI, and while VI is an amazing game I think you made a great choice with Final Fantasy IV. FF4 is one of my favorites (yes above 6 on my list) I've played through the game several times each in a different incarnation. I don't know which version you have but I would recommend the full 3D remake for the DS or Final Fantasy IV: The Complete Collection for the PSP. Regardless of which version you have (they all kick ass) I would definitely recommend you play the sequel Final Fantasy IV: The After Years. It's part of the PSP collection and you can also download it separately on Wii Ware.

I think you made a great choice with 4 and would suggest you move on to others like...well all of them! 6 most of all then maybe 3 for DS, then the remakes of 1 and 2 on GBA, PSP, or PSX. Also try Final Fantasy Dimensions on your mobile device! It's a classic SNES style brand new Official Final Fantasy game and it's friggin sweet.

I started on final fantasy X. I've logged over 500 hours on it, although getting all the celestial weapons can be frustrating, especially lulu's

You can start with any Final Fantasy game really, but the first one I played was Final Fantasy IV, followed by VI and a bit of VII. I also played Mystic Quest, but that one isn't like any of the others and I don't know if it counts.

I would need further information about the games you play and enjoy to tell you.  Because of the way that FF is, it either follows or leads the genre in some new direction.  Look at them on TVTropes before making a final decision.

final fantasy I is a great game to start with. It lets you choose the classes that are later given to a specific characters in other ff games.

I personally like FF Tactics Advance for gameboy advance SP, it is not really FF, but maybe it could get you in the feel of things.
