Are the games in the Dragon Quest series related to one another ? Like a very long series of novels ? Or are they stand-alone stories like Final Fantasy ?

They each have their own story but there does seem to be some kind of overarching story.(seems that they all take place on the same world at different times)

They don't really have anything to do with each other, they just share common themes.

Actually...1-3 and 4-6 are trilogies. The orders go 3-1-2 and 6-4-5. Yeah, the last game in both trilogies is the start (it only makes sense in 3 MUCH later on). 7-10 aren't related. Apparently, Terry, one of your party members from 6, really did have that Dragon Quest Monsters adventure as a kid, like canonically. Not sure if it was in his world, or if he fell into a dimensional hole and then came back later. I think this is only established as of the DS version of 6. Don't quote me on that.
