I think I agree with most of the people here that the older gen pokemon are much better. I do like the graphics of the newer games, but the pokemon themselves have just gotten incredibly annoying and too punny. I also hate that a lot more are based off stupid things, like ice-cream and stuff.

Though I prefer the originals (which I consider to be R/B/Y, G/S/C), I think a lot of preference towards them simply came from the age in which we played them... and, maybe only I feel this way, but, really, besides the graphics, story, and new pokemon, has the pokemon franchise ever really changed for the worse?

In my opinion, their innovations have been wonderful, and they're constantly continuing to come up with new ideas to make the series better. I think what makes us, as the older fanbase, like it less is that now that we're older, we've lost the fascination with the series that many of us had as children. I used to watch Pokemon every Saturday as a kid, collected the cards, bought a lot of the merchandise... I loved the series, with a passion. And, as I grew older, I grew out of it. And, now, I still like Pokemon, both the games and television series, but what makes me want to watch the old episodes and play the original games is the nostalgia effect, because it brings back some of the feelings I got watching/playing as a kid.

So, basically, I don't think it's an issue of the games themselves getting worse, I think it's just a matter of having lost the fascination factor that many of us so dearly held.

The first generations of Pokemon were completely original and unique, now it seems all the Pokemon designs are just misshaped repeats of old Pokemon and with completely unoriginal names. I do love the interface of the new Pokemon games though, that I do love. And I really can't wait for the 3DS Pokemon, that's going to be sick. Talk about a dream come true.

However. I did play my Pokemon Yellow game over the summer on my Gambeboy Color and it was just as awesome and enjoyable as playing any new Pokemon game.

I prefer the gameplay of the new games (definitely some good ideas implemented there) but it's getting ridiculous where the pokemon are concerned... I mean, there are 649 pokemon to catch now, and only one region to play.

i dont like the newer starters(gen 4 and 5) but the games are pretty good. also i feel that the person who created the unova map was a very lazy person. i mean a hexagon, really? i like earlier games because of their pokemon.

It depends Pokemon Yellow was a classic and I loved how Pikachu followed you around. But I do like how smart the new ones look too!

I like both old and new, as both have something good and bad.

i prefer the old ones definitely :| the new generation is simply too weird to my liking either the shapes or names or the abilities seems to copy the old ones and it doesn't feel original

I have yet to play anything newer than gen 3. In fact, I am trying to get enough dp to download white version and try it for myself. I was/am a huge fan of crystal version. The fact that you could go between both regions was awesome and it made the game last a lot longer. So, I am taking the side of the older versions. As mentioned earlier the creativity is just awful now.

The newer ones are nice and pretty, but I still like the older generations better. I think they had more charm to them, or maybe it is just because they were my first pokemon games. I still like all of the generations so for, except 5 because I have not played them yet.

My favourite game was definitely pokemon yellow. I miss the old ones. Nintendo has tried to make more recent games too complicated.

I tend to find the first two generations to be far more enjoyable.  I just think I out grew the franchise to be honest and couldn't bring myself to enjoy the newer games despite the fact that they offerred improvements over the previous generations while also introducing new monsters and moves.

With later generations they added duel types, more types, reclassified some which made the effective strategies change a lot from generation to generation. The most noticeable was the gen one red and gen 3 fire red. The story was the same, the strategy changed. Fire types being strong enough to dominate early game without needing a grass type early on. (Charmander used Metal Claw). It made it more complicated yet easier at the same time.

There have always been Duel types in the Pokemon Games.  Heck, one of the first pokemon you encounter is pidgey which is a normal/flying type.  And, if that isn't enough you also have Garyados the Water/Flying type which is a strange/terrible combination since it is extremely weak against electric types.  You also have other terrible combations like the fossil pokemon that are water/ground type and have a ton of weakness because of it.

I'll assume that you also enjoyed chasing down the legendary dogs in Pokemon G/S/C.  And, to be honest I found chasing them to be an annoyance.  They were a pain to track down and then you had to worry about knocking them out or the fact that they would run away almost as soon as combat started.  About, the only effective way to catch them was with a smeargle that had been taught both False Swipe and Mean Look.  This way you didn't have to worry about knocking them out and if mean look was used on them they would be unable to run away.

The quality of the games in my opinion has improved. It just the new pokemon being released is not as good as the old ones.

I grew up playing red and yellow. I loved red so much and spent hours playing, yellow was cool beacuse pikachu followed you around but I never was a fan of it because it was just like red minus all the pokemon I raised. I think two years ago was the first time I played a diffrent version and that was pokemon white, loved it! I know the pokemon have funny names like "Trubish" but I really don't mind. I mean common, look at the original 150, there was a pokemon called Horsea and it was a Seahorse :P  It's funny names like that that made pokemon waht it is.

Recently I got pokemon X and man, I LOVE it. The new mechnics like hoard battles and sky battles are so exciting! I feel like a kid again :D

Honestly i would definitely prefer the newer versions of pokemon because as said the graphics are way better, the characters seem to be more interesting and unlike the older version of pokemon the newer version aren't as predictable as the old one and also the pokemon are cool too,so yep ill prefer the newer pokemon games.

Hm. I think I will state A quote I heard From online somewhere "Graphics are not Everything" The Game is in just that, The gameplay! And You have to admit... Besides All the little gimicks pokemon has not budged for a LONG time. The game that I liked the most that came out Recently was Soulsilver/Heartgold. Why? The same reason all these other people Probably love the older Games, Nestalgia.

NOT that Im saying that The new pokemon are Bad! They are just... Off. You know what I mean?
