i bought the wifi R4i 3DS and download the software for it (they send you a link or download it from the site r4i-sdhc.com/downloade.asp ) and now it is unable to play the 3ds game i download from her, it cant even see them but you can see the normal ds game. also with the ds games on the R4 you can only save twice and the third time it freezes and clears the save data. anybody got any suggestions?

To clarify your first point, the R4i 3DS is not meant to play 3DS roms, it is only a flash cart that will let you play DS roms on your 3DS.

Second, which specific game are your trying to have to save freeze issue?
Most DS roms have an anti-piracy protection on them and might require some sort of patching to make them work.

have you made sure you have the right firmware for your DS?
also 3DS emulation on flashcarts is impossible at the moment.

I'm a little confused, I was about to order a 3ds console but wanted to check you could still use the flash carts. Everyone seems to say it can't be done on the 3ds but I see 3ds roms up for downloads on many websites now. Is there no way to play these roms on a 3ds console? If so it would be a waste of time my upgrading the console and may as well stick with the nds until things change

Thanks guys :)

At the current moment, this is how it is:

Flash carts, such as the R4i 3DS, or any flash carts having 3DS in their names, are flash carts that can play DS games on the 3DS.

There are a lot of 3DS roms being dumped, but there is no way of playing any of them yet.

Hopefully that will be clear enough. :)

Sakamoto-san --- Your reply was crystal clear and ended my quest to find out why the 3DS roms would not play on my R4 card.

For a new topic ---- Every time the 3DS console promts me to do a Software Upgrade, my R4 card stops working and I have to wait until the next revision of R4 software is updated. Does this happen to everyone? Or am I doing something wrong? I have had to do this twice. I want to Update the 3DS because when I get to a "hot spot", some of the programs do not function and it prompts me to update. What should I do??!!

On a side note - I recently had a R4 card for a DSi go dead. I verified this by using friend's units. The software and ROMs on the micro SD card were still working. Not a big deal, it was over 3 years old. Just thought I would pass that on.

Speedbox - The 3DS is an AWESOME unit! YES, hold off for the 3DS XL (Bigger Screen) coming out soon. But don't wait too long, cause you are missing out on some great 3D action. And I'm sure it won't be long before our friends here at DGEmu get those 3DS roms working on and R4!

Try to hold off 3DS updates until the R4 updates appear. There's not much else that can be done with this, I'm afraid! Nintendo will keep updating the 3DS, and will keep compelling all users to update their 3DS-es along with them, and will continue to block flashcarts with each updates. We'll just have to go along with that for now.

And I'm sure it won't be long before our friends here at DGEmu get those 3DS roms working on and R4!

It won't be up to us, but yepp. We'll let all of you guys know when they've found a way! :D
(Will probably take years, though, going by precedent. Don't get your hopes up.)

@Chizzy: No functioning 3DS emulators as of yet. Only DS emulators such as DesMuMe and No$GBA are worthwhile for now.

And as pointed out by Molh, all of the updates brought to the console are also aimed at blocking flash carts.
On my end, I still have 2 old DS Lite units for the case that either my 3DS or DSi blocks off my flash cart, I still have a chance at upgrading the firmware and such with the DS Lite.

@planefixer: Glad I could clarify this. :) I know the Internet is full of people having the same question in mind, and that some actually lose money buying something that isn't really properly advertised, so hopefully those people will get the chance to read this and save themselves a few dollars.
