I have a 4 year old "R4 Upgrade Revolution" that runs all the games I got 4 years ago fine. After not touching my DS for a few years I recently found it in storage with the R4 and all. I downloaded this game:

http://www.dgemu.com...o-Kage-no-Eiyuu

which came out in 2010 and whenever I tried to run it the screen would turn white and the DS would freeze up. I tried installing wood 1.31 which didn't work, and after some research found out that real R4 cards don't have the word Upgrade on the cartridge which means I hae some crappy knock off that can only use firmware from early 2010.

So now I'm searching for a new flash cart that can play newer DS games. Price is no obstacle. Some of the 3rd generation stuff looks pretty impressive, but I don't want to accidently buy a cheap knock off again.

I was blessed by buying the original R4 card with my DSLite a long time ago when there were no clones at all. I used to update it with the official updates. But when they stopped supporting the R4, I started using Wood R4 and YSMenu. Both work very well with the R4. I still have my original DSLite and the R4 card.
I think you shouldn't give up on your card just yet. Look for different patches and softwares that might work with your card or the game you're interested in.

The one flashcart that blows others out of the water would be the supercard DSTWO. It has consistent updates, an on-board cpu, to do stuff like play gba games without accessories and some other features. It is very expensive, about $40,- or so, but if money ain't an issue, this is the best flashcart money can buy.

Little note: Paypal has been blocking paypal accounts of flashcart retailers, thus locking out a safe payment method. Please use great care when ordering flashcarts online.

You can also look into patching your games if you aren't keen on spending your money. A very user friendly tool is retrogamefan's rom tool which can be downloaded here: http://filetrip.net/...205-f25536.html

Keep in mind that the tool only accepts clean roms, this means that you can't use a patched, trimmed, or otherwise modified rom.

I recently aquired the ACE3DS Plus and it seems to be some kind of cheap knock off of Acekard2i but it actually works on the latest DS/3DS/3DSXL firmware, (unlike the Acekard2i which I also have) so maybe give that a shot. (I can run the AP patched Pokemon Black 2 rom perfectly :P)

I used Acekard2i before, but some of the games were not working on my nds machine.  I'm changing to DSTWO and I like it so far.  All the games I downloaded so far are working on the 3DS.  I'm happy with it, and I saw on the official webstie, they still update the firmware.

R4i Gold or the R4i Wood works wonders with the 3ds and supports the lastest firmware with no problems and they have great support and fast updates, R4i Gold will definitely be the prefered choice.
