I was wondering if it was able to play mp4 or mp3 files that are added to the memory disk? I been searching, but couldn't find any solid answers.
I am thinking about buying a 3DS

mp4 is for both audio and video, mp3 is audio only.
Anyway, I looked around a little and first of all: I'm definitely sure it is capable of playing mp3 (just copy them to the SD card).
As for mp4, I scoured the internet a bit and I think the final conclusion is: Yes, you can play mp4...sort of. You won't see anything though, you'll only get the audio.
So you can either wait for Nintendo to release some kind of video player (it seems a lot of people think something like this will happen), or you could try searching the internet for an alternative way of playing mp4 e.g. using homebrew.

mp3 sure
video on the other hand apparently has to be avi format and follow very specific guidelines. The trouble it would take in my opinion really isn't worth the effort.

Yes, you should be able to play mp3 files at least, if not mp4 files. It's a neat little system, definitely an upgrade from the Nintendo DS!
