I am considering buying a DS system for my daughter for christmas, but i donct know if I should get her a 3DS or 2DS. As far as I can tell the 2DS does everything a 3DS does, but also has motion sensor, but is about £90 cheaper. This doesn't seem to make sense to me. does anyone know why its cheaper? is it any good?

As far as I know the only difference with an ordinary 3DS are these:
- The 2DS is not foldable and has a completely different shape
- The 2DS doesn't have a 3D mode
- The 2DS has a little bit of a longer battery life
- The 2DS only has mono sound
- The 2DS doesn't have a power saving mode
(- In my opinion the 2DS is a LOT uglier than a 3DS)
The differences with a 3DS XL are nearly the same, except these:
- The 3DS XL has a longer battery life than the 2DS
- The screens of the 3DS XL are a lot bigger
- No power adapter may be included with the 3DS XL, depending on your region
I've never actually held a 2DS in my hands, so I don't know which one is more comfortable, though it appears to me that a 2DS would be a bit awkward to hold.
And...the price difference is £90?
That's... quite a lot. I though it was only about $40.
Anyway, I'd say the 2DS is a console more aimed towards little kids (no 3D to screw with their developing eyes, a little more sturdy shape, etc.), while the 3DS (XL) is more for older people.
So it depends a bit on how old your daughter is.

Because it doesn't create the 3D image the 3DS does, the 2DS also is not as compact, it doesn't fold in half like the other Nintendo DSes.
Think of the 2DS mainly for those:
1) with neurological disorders or people who were spectacles, given that anyone in those 2 categories are professionally not recommended to view 3D movies, etc.
2) who will not that often as a portable console, yes it is still smaller then the PS3, XBox 360, etc but it does not fold up small enough to fit in your pocket, etc.

For people with small hands it'll fit in their hand nicely. It's an ugly flat thing though.

Thanks for the info guys, looks like I might go for the 3DS XL as its got a bigger screen, and I like the fact it folds (hopefully she wont break /scratch the screen on it) as long as it can play the pokemon games I think she'll be happy. I think the price difference was a bit out (I was looking at a XL in toys r us)

If you're afraid of her damaging the screen you should get some screen protectors too.

The Hori screen protector is great... remember to get one of those

The bigger concern over scratches should be the hinges though.

I thought the hinges were pretty sturdy though, do they snap easy?

If he gets the 2DS though, I thought there weren't any hinges since it doesn't fold up?

in my opinion id rather stick with the 3ds because it can fold, its more convienent for carrying it around and the 2ds seems like it could snap pretty easy.

Well i do prefer the 3ds to the 2ds but it's only my opinion... you should try both and then decide for yourself...

Yeah... The 2ds is pretty sketchy to me, It just seems to be a gimicky thing that nintendo shipped out to get more money... A 3ds without the 3d and you can't hold it well in your pocket.
The only thing I see thats any good about it is that it has a longer battery life...

I am extremely glad that I stumbled upon this thread because I had NO idea the 2ds wasn't foldable/compact. That is a huge deal for me because being used to the gb and gba. The 2ds seems to me like a wiiu controller. very awkward indeed. I would rather dish out the few extra bucks on a 3ds. whether its the normal or large doesn't really matter to me. I need me some nintendersz

I ended up getting the 3DS XL because the bigger screen really is worth the extra bit of money over the regular 3DS. The 2DS not being able to fold takes away the portable part of portable gaming.

While I have not personally played with a 2DS, I have seen someone playing on one and it did not appear to be too awkward. The 2DS holds similar to a unfolded 3DS. Nintendo (and I'm sure other 3rd party people) have created a carrying case specifically for the 2DS, so it can be carried without worrying about the screen getting scratched up. The fact that the 2DS doesn't fold seems to be the main catching point for not getting one of these, for most people. However, remember that the original GBA didn't fold up either.
I think the 2DS is a good "starter" system for someone who wants to get their kids a "portable" console and some games but not spend quite as much as a 3DS would cost.

I have to somewhat agree with the person above me. As a person who has used a 2DS, 3DS and a 3DSXl, I can honestly say they all have their benefits. The size of the XL is great for adults as it is larger and has a larger screen. Getting a 2DS along with a unique carrying case is akin to just getting a 3ds. 3DS hinges seem more delicate than XL ones though, but at the same time the 2DS has less protection for its screens, (which is more expensive to repair). If you feel like your kids can take care of the system pretty well, then go 2DS, as it is a sturdy and affordable option albeit, less screen protection. otherwise go regular 3DS. Unless you want the biggest screen for them, then obviously XL is the only way to go.

Keep in mind that the 2DS does not fold up, thus is prone to scratches on both screens if not protected by a screen protector. I would still recommend the 3ds and just keep 3d mode off to protect her eyes.

To the above user who worried that the 2DS seemed flimsy since it doesn't fold up: I got one for my birthday earlier this year, and it's actually both thicker and heavier than I expected it to be. Through normal use, I don't think you could snap it unless you intentionally *worked* at snapping it. Maybe if it got stepped or sat on *really* wrong, perhaps, but.... Yeah, I don't think snapping is that big an issue here. However, what I did *not* take into account was the fact that without the folding, this DOES leave both screens vulnerable to scratches and to dust getting all up in the crevices without screen protectors (which I think I ought to invest in sooner rather than later). Other than that, I really haven't encountered an issue with using it, so... they're not entirely bad! Granted, I grew up with the original oldschool Gameboy (the grey one that felt like you were playing a brick, LMAO) so I guess the larger size and heavier weight of this felt somewhat natural to me probably for that reason.

I got a 2DS last Christmas (I asked for one) and my sister got a 3DS for her birthday. She let me play hers and in my opinion, the 3DS is much better. I like how the 3DS is foldable, the 2DS is kind of ugly. Even though it was a gift, I feel like my 2DS was wasted money :/

If i were you, i would consider how much budget is left for buying games on the console. 2DS games are way cheaper than the 3DS'. Think about it.

I'd go for 3DS just for the bigger screen size

So lots of open and close is rough on a hinged model. but the 2DS lacking the power saving options... I have to ask does that mean it doesn't have a sleep mode? because it if doesn't, that hurts street pass ability. Please correct me if I am wrong on that people with 2DS systems.
Well, I don't have a 2DS but I'm sure when I once saw a pic of the 2DS, it had a "Sleep" switch.
...
...
...
Alright, just done a quick search for it and yeah there is a sleep switch right at the bottom right of the 2DS below the power button.

Last time i checked it was 20 dollars cheaper (convert that if you need), and 2ds looks awkward and has no 3d mode. the only reason you should get a 2ds is if someone your getting it for has siesures.
