I would really like to know how many people just jump strait to gamefaqs or gamewinners or whatever. When I was young (years ago) I would not really have a place to go for cheats (other than nintendo power, which actually use to be cool), and I was a good at all sorts of games espically RPG's. Now there is so much unlockable crap, that I don't want to miss I find myself refering to these sites before I play, and that is a bunch of bull. So I am starting over, but cold turkey is hard, so I will start with a game I have played many times (until the battery ran out of the cartridge) Shining Force. Please join me, break the habit, toss the needle, be a true gamer.

basically ive been a gamer since the old atari 2600. i played basically ever system since that has come to america. ive writen a few faqs to games and ive also made cheats before (i dont do that anymore out of principle) i usually never use gamefaqs/gamewinners unless i am really tired and dont want to figure it out. personally i agree people should try things them selves before looking crap up.

I never use cheats unless i have spend more than three days on the same point and at that point i am about to either drop the game for good from frastration or get a walkthrough for that part. Its much better to use help to get past one point thatn to drop a good game because their is a part that is virtually impossible to see or find :P than to srtop playing it and leave it half way.Dont you agree?

i usually always try to play any game without walkthroughs or cheats... although if i do reach a spot that i can't seem to figure out a way past, after awhile i'll look it up quick in a faq before continuing on as usual.

Hah, to hell with cheats. I haven't used cheats ever. Whenever I get to a part of a game I either don't know, or can't figure out, I just play another game and go back to it later. Usually after some time away, I'm able to figure out whatever I couldn't figure out before. The only time I really ever use any game cheat and faqs site is to see when the newest games are available. But it's very much worth it when you can honestly say that you beat the game without any cheats or help. :)

thats true. we wouldnt want to encourage the mistreatment of helpless systems. :) . basically mastou (and others here as well) have hit the nail on the head (american saying) that is the basis behind all gamefaqs style sites. i mean they are Frequently Asked Questions after all. chances are if that level gave you a permanent eye twitch, it did the same too someone else. better to have that info out there (ive made more than one faq just to brag that i knew stuff others didnt) instead of spreading the unchecked abuse of these poor defensless objects.

Well, I've been playing computer games for almost two decades now and have certainly written my fair share of FAQs, Cheats and Hints for folk.I think that with the level of sophistication that today's games have reached, sometimes an FAQ can be a handy thing to have on standby - it's most frustraiting to find that you've forgotten a vital piece of a puzzle and have to replay half the game to correct your mistake :)Personally, I have found little (although I admit, occasional) need to use guides myself, but for those who are stuck it can really be a godsend :)Cheating can also sometimes be a lot of fun! You can enjoy exploring and messing around without the threat of death or timers running out every five minutes.

To me it feels almost like games have changed. Look at some of the most complex games of the 16-bit generation, Tales of Phantasia (translated by the wonderful people of dejap.com) took me about 32 hours, which was unheard of at the time, but I finished it without cheating (reading a walkthrough or FAQ). Not everyone has played that one, so maybe cronotrigger is a better example. You could always just reset if you found you could do things better.Today I have progressed through the gaming years, and have a xbox gamecube and gameboy advanced. I have NBA ballers, a sports game and there is so much unlockable crap I feel compelled to look at a FAQ. For this reason golden sun was not as fun as it could have been. I've been playing golden sun 2, knowing FAQs will hurt the game and add nothing but I am still drawn to there seductive nature.

If I get really stuck in and spend alot of hours not getting anywhere I will use a faq and carefully try to not read anything except for the part I really need to know. But that is usually after such a long time that if I get stuck again I'll resort to the faq easier.. so its sort of a downward spiral.. last time i used a faq was in Golden Sun cant remember what though.. but I do rememeber checking out a few things among others how to beat certain bosses...

I cheat rarely. Perhaps when I've sucked out every little bit of fun to be had, then I cheat.Like infinite ammo (handgun) for RE2.Or, after completing the whole game and finding every item in SotN, I just cheat, and fart around.I don't normally use FAQ's, either.

Why I use Walkthroughs:1. Gets to the point of the game without the fluff2. Allows you to beat the game without any mistakes3. It helps solve all the mini-games and secrets the programmers put to make the player enjoy the gameWhy I despise walkthroughs:1. Gets to the point of the game without the fluff - Why waste your time playing it then?!2. Allows you to beat the game without any mistakes - Why waste your time playing it then?!3. It helps solve all the mini-games and secrets the programmers put to make the player enjoy the game - Why waste your time playing it then?!If you spent $x.xx for the game, why would you want to ruin the fun of finishing the game by reading a huge .txt file?!spoilers: Once you get into the game, then look at the faqs, it ruins the suspense the programmers intended... I played Kingdom Hearts, and looked at the walkthrough to defeat Armaugh, only to read on and find out that the endingIt pissed me off that I spent all this time to see what happens, only to read the courier type font ending.... Games are meant to be fun, not a task, the FAQs are like the checklist of games "Make sure you do this, to get this ending" If you finished the game without one, great, maybe a walkthrough will help you with those spots you forgot or never accomplished... The mini-game in the forest, where you have to hit the nuts, was impossible for me, but I may look at the walkthrough to see how I can do it

Personally, im a fan of the really good long rpgs. I always try my best to go withou getting a little hint here and there. Most the time I get through the game pretty well on my own.. theres only been a couple occasions where ive gotten stuck.
