I think they are a good thing. Little kids should not be playing Doom 3, for example. The problem is when they start passing laws based on them.

If there weren't a ESRB rating the goverment would ban games since violent games is quite a lot nowadays.

I'm all for the ESRB. Like mentioned above, younger kids shouldn't be playing games like Doom3, GTA, etc. I also think that that the gaming industry is too strict on imports. In games like Megaman Zero, they've removed the slight blood-spray you get when you slash an enemy with the Z-saber that was originally in the japanese version. But that's just me.

Having no rating makes no sence. Would you take away the ratings from a movie? It is the same for games, they need them (albeit many people don't follow them).

They are supposed to be intended as a guide though. Not some set in stone line. I also think they need to either add a PG type rating, or raise the point at which a game gets classed as Teen. Games nowadays are so realistic that if they have any action at all, they get rated as Teen. Case in point would be the GCN game Custom Robo.

The whole reason why the ESRB exsists is becuase in the mid 90's the U.S. government told the game industry that if it doesn't make a rating system for its self they would. Can you imagin what would happen if they didn't have one. Games like GTA would be banned becuase the only defense the game industry has is "The game has a M rating so little kids shouldn't be playing it don't blame us blame the store or the kids parants for letting that kid have it." If they didn't have the ratings we'd all be screwed and still playing games for little kids.

Most of the best games gameplay wise are rated E or T, if you haven't noticed. A lot of people think they can rely solely on blood and gore to sell their games. A ban on all violent games might be nice, since it would put all the designers of generic FPS games out of business.

True. But we'd lose a lot of other games as well. It's true that they do use violence as a marketing tool. The sad part is that it works. If we banned all violent games, we'd kill the industry. We'd pretty much have racing games and puzzlers left.

Except for Nintendo games, of course. A revert to only non-violent games would essentially just be pulling stuff back to its state before the newest set of consoles was released.

I think there should be a ESRB rating some people look at that before they buy the game. Just to see what type of game it is.

I think the only people that dont approve of ESRB ratings are the 12 year olds whose mothers wont buy them San Andreas.

I see ESRB ratings as suggestions and therefore think they're fine. I agree with their idea, just as long as they don't start making really weird laws around them. I think that having to have an adult buy an M rated game is perfectly appropriate because if the kid can really be fine with understanding the content in that sort of a game then they should be fine understanding the need for such a rule and should be able to talk their parents into letting them allow that the child plays that game.

In my opinion, most of the M games out there suck anyways, so the ESRB ratings don't affect me at all.But oh well...I think ESRB ratings are a good thing, as long as they're not too severely enforced and games aren't unfairly judged. But until that happens, I think they actually help quiet stupid people whining about violence in videogames. Because if they know a game's bloody, they can just, y'know, not buy it./BerrybrainZ

What's funny is that many parents don't pay attention to the ratings. Case in point was the game Conker's Bad Fur Day. A lot of little kids asked for it because they thought it looked cute, and their parents got it for them on the same basis... Apparently not noticing the large "M" and the fact that Conker is drinking beer on the cover.

ive never had a problem with my parents not letting me buy a game because of the rating, and the problem with store clerks not letting me buy them never happens to me. So id have to say i could care less.

My one major annoyance I've had with a ranking was the PS2 game Zone of the Enders. It was rated M because of the demo disk it contained, or something. There was no way that game deserved a mature rating (the first one, not the second where the main character was swearing every 5 seconds) and it made it so I had to spend a really long time talking my parents into letting me get it.

The rating is there for a reason, to restrict under-ages of the games rating to not play it.Because some parents are to blind to notice the ratings and blame the games for teaching violent things to the little kids.Besides my parents don't really care for me getting Mature rated games. I know it's fake so I don't copy it.

Regardless of what people say, observing violence, even and perhaps especially when it's fake, does make one think more about violence. Whether or not it makes them more likely to commit violent acts is unknown.

I think the esrb should disband, but i think so only becos it's closely affilated to the ESA, emulation's no.1 enemy, and they all s_ck to the core...Ok fine so im supposed to make a fair judgement, but sorry i cant, not for the esrb.

Personally, the esrb rating are nice, They don't 'infringe' on the gaming experince.( E.g., I don't look at the box while playing the game.) Also, it's nice for parents who have a guide to what thier kid is getting. I know some of you think age restriction is stupid and 5-year olds should be able to go see gladiator and hardcore porn should be a staple for every televison station, please, shut up.

I'm not opposed to five year olds watching gladiator, so long as their parents approve.

I think they are a very good thing, because then parents can't blame game companies for making games that influence their kids. This way they have no excuse, since they know their kid shouldn't be playing the game.

I think there should be, because it's a parent's right to know what they're getting their kids and personaly I would want for when I have kids for someone to give me a guideline as far as what's in the game rather than me have to buy and play it myself to know it's safe.

I like the ESRB. I think its by far the best rating system there is and that the movie industry should have to rate movies in a similar way.
