LOL! there's always a topic on who's better roy or marth and everybody seems to think or like roy better but on the contrary despite popular (n00b lol sorry) belief marth actually is much much better than roy...tier wise of course. if you really want to know about ssb:m you should go to the forums in gamefaqs you could learn tons of things that you didn't even know existed. but anywayz im going to get this straight.marth IS BETTER (yes he is) than roy. just becuz roy as t3h PhIr3 doesn't means he's better. here's what makes marth better than roy, at least in the tier list he is. (marth is one of the best 3 characters, with shiek being 1st and i think fox is 2nd or 3rd i don't remember, and roy is in the middle i think with link)-both characters have a sweet spot, this is a spot on the sword that if you hit your opponent there it does more damage and it sends them much farther than you would normally send him.-marth has his sweet spot in the tip of his sword, and roy has it in the middle, this is an advantage to marth becuz if you know how to actually play it is better to have a long ranged sweet spot than a shorter one, becuz if the opponent is closer to you it is very unlikely that u will be able to hit him with a smash (where the sweet spot really takes affect) becuz he could easily block, side step, grab, or roll. while marth has it on the tip he can smash and its harder for the opponent to do something about it. its also easier for marth to do a combo and finish it off with a right A smash tipped than roy doing a combo and hitting them with his sweet spot (which is in the middle)-marth has for the most part less lag, and is faster than roy-unlike everbody thinks roy is not stronger than marth on the contrary he is actually weaker for the most part, the only thing he does excel in strenght over marth is all his B moves are stronger than marth's.-this is where marth really gets over roy in being better, marth's air game is much much much better than roy's. by air game i mean that he can stay or he doesn't fall as fast as roy does and overall his air moves give him a much bigger advantage than roy. his air moves can also have an easier time hitting the opponent in the tip of the sword rather than roy's air moves which almost never hit in his sweet spot the middle of the sword) and if you people don't really know how to use a character's air game than your really underestimating a lot of characters. like jiggilypuff (GASP!!) yea jiggilypuff ownz becuz she has arguably the best air game in the game and yes she ownz. other characters air game or air moves make them much better if used correctly.-marth can also recover much better than roy, if you don't know how i will tell you how. right b, the first swing of the sword if done in the air gives u a little bit of a jump or delays the time that you fall. so knowing this what you do when your knocked out of the stage you jump (if you have a jump) and you press right b and you do the first swing (i think he turns red?) then you let him fall a little bit and you do it again, and again (ONLY DOING THE FIRST PART OF THE RIGHT B COMBO!!) until after a few tries the right B isn't useful anymore and marth falls slower when not doing anything than if you would press the right B. so you let marth fall towards the stage. now the part that gets noobs is that they use marth's up B too quick, too early. marth's up B is 99.9% vertical so you want to do to get its full potential, use it when you are half way down the stage (im picturing final destination stage) and then you do it, he will probably grab the ledge keeping you safer from ur opponent and allowing more options. you have to get used to the distance that marth goes with up B, but remember don't think of it as a horizontal up B think, even if your right in front of the ledge it is better than you keep on dropping or maybe attack your opponent with right A and then pressing up B and grabbing the ledge. than pressing up B when your horizontally almost there.ps. i don't really know if you understood what i said on the recovery part but if you didn't or want to see it go to youtube and put marth recovery or just put marth supersmash and you'll probably see a good fight in which they do what im trying to explain.-marth has a spike (so does roy but its extremely hard to do it). a spike is when you hit your opponent down instead of up or right/left. marth's spike is down A in the air. so when your opponent is trying to comeback to the stage and about to reach the edge u jump out (not too far becuz down A in the air has some lag) and you throw him down givin him no chance of gettin on. and it also is a good ownage move. marth's spike cannot be meteor cancelled (this means that other spikes in the game like captain falcon's down A in the air, if you get hit by it you can jump str8 back up as soon as he hits you with it, but with marth's this can't happen). to do marth's spike however you have to hit with your sweet spot (the tip of the sword) if you don't it'll not work. i really doubt you can spike with roy doing down A in the air, and his other spikes are wierd as hell like when you press up A smash, one of his flames if caught in the angle and exact place hits you down but thats almost usless becuz its super hard to do.-i think marth's grab is slightly longer than roy's, and marth's grab is one of the best in the game becuz its super long considerring it doesn't use a grab like link's or samus', but the lag behind link and samus is super long so thats why marth's grab is so good, its long but its a normal grab so there's not much lag behind it.so im going to stop here, i think i typed too much but i really wanted to show the points of how marth>roy. but of course this doesn't mean that you can't beat marth with roy of course you can. it all depends on the player. and all of this is considered theoritically becuz for most people none of this applies becuz if you don't play really really really good then none of this matters. and of course there are too many variables even if somebody is extremely good marth player and a extremley good roy player to say that the marth player is going to win for sure becuz its a better character. but you can't ignore that they are characters that have less flaws and more advantages than others, and that they are characters with a lot of flaws. this is where the tier list comes in. but in a 4 player brawl roy can be as good or maybe even better than marth, it all depends on how you play, and if you want to find out a lot more about ssb:m go to gamefaqs.com forums so you actually know whats up. terms you should find out what they do and how to do them L-cancel and wavedash and others they could really open up a world of other options and better gameplay LOL have fun!THE MARTH PWNZ ROY FAQ!! honestly i always thought of it as a matter of preference. Roy is alot stronger than Marth, but Marth is faster than Roy. There is also a subtle difference in their B attack. For Marth, most of the damage when fully charged comes from the tip of the blade. Roy's damage focuses on the hilt. If you can play as Roy and kick Marth's butt, then there ya go.

Roy or Marth a question most people asked wen SSBM came out. Oh yeah.... and try to add some points to why they're better

in my opinion roy is a better fighter and is better looking but marth is myterious and daring like a young batman if they battled each other it would be a fight to the finish with a titanic ending

Roy is in fact worse than Marth. Marth excells at arial fights and is second best only to fox. Where as Roy dmges himself, marth actually has no moves that can hurt him, also he does recover fast as ippo stated, im a huge ssbm player and i kno from personal experience that Marth is better, marths attacks are quicker also. plus i think alot of you are basing your posts off of who you like more, and that actually holds no grounds in this chat as to who is betterAlso if you go to youtube and look for SSBM tournements, you will see that the best player in the world is a guy named Ken from Japan. And he uses marth. Thats got to tell you something right there *nods*

Ken isn't from Japan. He's from the US. But yes, Ken is officially ranked number one in America and generally regarded as the best around the world. Yes, he mains Marth, but that doesn't necessarily mean Marth is better. If that were the case, Marth would be above Fox in the tier list which he isn't.Marth is, however, better than Roy hands down. The reasons have been stated multiple times, most importantly being the location of sweetspots, attack lag, falling speed, and aerial combat proficiency.

ROY is not worse or better than Marth. Argue all you want, the fact remains that its all about the skill of the player.I use Roy's lack of air time to my advantage; Its very easy for me to quickly dodge about the area using short, fast little attacks. Marth on the other hand is very slow in the air, making fast attacks almost an impossibility. I beat the 15 min. melee with Roy with over 1000 kills, and less than 50% damage. It also seems to be very easy to me to get close in to the enemy and nail them with my blade very fast and hard. It all depends on who you are better with. I have never been beaten more than twice, though i am seeking hard opponents. >.<

Marth IS a BETTER character than roy because the player is exposed to having an easier time beating somebody with marth than with roy because if you use marth correctly or the most efficient way (meaning not smashing A everwhere) marth has more advantages and less flaws than roy.let me put it to you this way. if an expert tourney player that knows how to take full advantage of shffl's and everything there is to do and is really good, plays against the same type of player but one picks marth and the other one picks mr. game and watch. marth is PROBABLY going to win becuz mr. game and watch has the HUGE flaw of having HUGE LAG after almost every move, so which character is the "better" character? MARTH.but i do understand what your trying to say of course and it is kind of true in a sense but you can't ignore that they are characters that have many advantages and very little disadvantages and that all characters are not even or balanced. but of course its possible to beat marth with Mr. G&W we are humans and there are a lot of variables its not like we pick a good character against a bad or mid one and we automatically win.o and beating the 15 min. blah blah blah doesn't really give you a sense of skill when it comes to fighting other people one on one. it takes skill i guess but in another completely different way than if you were fighting somebody that knows how to play decently. im not saying you suck but just saying that there are awesome tourney players who lose against level 7 computers because they are so used to doing mind games and moving around when the computer isn't going to respond to any of that becuz its AI. while mind games should be a HUGE part in your game.

As a character, Marth is better than Roy. The reasons have been stated several times. It's undisputed that Marth is stronger. The only attacks where Roy will do more damage are his B attacks, which is negligible. The added fire effect of Roy's attacks do nothing, and in fact, make his attacks feel like they have less impact. Marth's sword is also superior to Roy's, as the Falchion's sweetspot is located at the tip whereas the Sword of Seals has it near the hilt. That means Marth can hit harder from farther away, where Roy has to get closer for maximum damage. Marth's grabs are also much better, as he can chain grab as well as combo off of them whereas Roy cannot. Whether Marth or Roy is faster is up for grabs, however, as Marth has less delay on his attacks and Roy has faster SHFFLs.But yes, the most important factor is player skill. However, if two equally skilled players fought one another, one with Marth and the other with Roy, the one playing Marth is much more likely because Marth is, in fact, the better character. It's not a definite win for the Marth player, but he does have the higher chance of winning.

I have never been beaten more than twice, though i am seeking hard opponents. ^_^

Sorry, but you obviously haven't played anyone worthwhile then.

My personal favorite is Marth.Hes faster than Roy is in most cases, the only time Roy is strong is his special moves ( the B buttion )Marth's advantage is more range because the tip of his sword does more damage where Roy has the middle.Sure Roy has that exploasion attack but that takes a bit too long to charge up. I rarely use that ability when playing Roy.And finaly, I like speed over power. Damage adds up with overwellming speed.

In meta-game, Marth would be better. Reasons have been stated multiple times already, so I'll just say that it's much easier to spike with a Marth than with a Roy. Being spiked = virtual deathPersonally though, I don't like Marth because of all them smash-happy fools that use Marth I have to deal with =_=I root for the underdog! >_>

I'd say that marth would be better because he can keep quite a distance away and can pull away much quicker than roy also you can chain grab while that might be hard to pull on expierienced players. I'd only use roy on nubs to treat them like a sack of meat

LOL your both wrong. I decided to test this just now, and both results were the same. In Practice mode against princess peach, both marth and roy both dealt 13% damage when hitting with the tip. Its sad to see that so many people have jumped on this little bandwagon...My opinion, it all depends on the skill of the player. The characters abilities have nothing to do with the game really, its how you use them. You want an example? A 6 year old could use marth and I could win using the "A" button with roy. Point: a 6 year old more than likely has no skill. Skill with a character is what counts. ><

Results were the same, yes, my bad. But your results are off. They should both be at 20% with the F-smash when hit with the sweetspot. However, Marth hits harder when comparing attacks not connected at the sweetspots. 14% to Roy's 12%.
