My favorite bands and groups from Japan are Arashi, Orange Range, and FLOW. I haven't gotten any music though so it's bound to change soon for me.

For the mainstream jrock and visual kei, I'd recommend Miyavi, Alice Nine, Nightmare, 12012, Gazette and Dir en Grey. Gackt too, though his albums tend towards the pricey side... There are a whole bunch of great indie bands your parents might consider stocking, like D.For Jpop, Arashi, w-inds, Yumi Shizukusa, Ayumi, Sambomaster, HYDE... the list goes on :)Stocking popular anime soundtracks might be a good idea too.Hope this helps :P

Here's a snippet of artists from my collection of Asian artists (Korean/Japanese), some of which may have already been mentioned: Shiro Sagisu, Ai Otsuka, Yuki Kimura, BoA, Hikaru Utada. If you want to find others, try going to www.animeacademyradio.net and listen to the internet radio there to get ideas (once they're back up again). If you're feeling generous, send them a donation for providing you with the artists names (they have a database of the music they play, so it'll even tell you where you can get it on amazon.com as well as one or two other places, and also provide you with the name of the Sound Track or album the song came from). The website's also helpful because of their voting system, so you might be most interested in the ones with high ratings, as they're more popular (and played more often, too). While they're offline though, just go into the boards and look through there, as there are tons of popular artists names that you can pick up in there too.Edit: Looking briefly through the topic (or rather, just up this page), Orange Range is very good too, one worth looking at.
