Then create a new layer atop everything else and select it with the lasso tool just like how I did borders in my previous tut:
Then through edit/stroke create a 1 pixel black border and filter it with a gaussian blur (filter/blur/gaussian blur). Choose your settings so you shade without hidding too much of your sig:
Then just move your layer in the row you want. (Make it under anything front-rowish)
And tada! You got some nice shade for your dark sigs. Also it blends a bit more your render into your sig.Comments are always appreciated.

Can someone explain that to me? I don't understand the part where he says now just click edit/clear.Now with still the polygon lasso on hand right click on your selection and select reverse selection. Then right click on it again and select feather, then make it to 20 pixels.now just click on edit/clear until you are satisfied. (with the render layer selected)5. After that if you chose to put the render layer under the color blance ones you can try and switch the layer type to luminosity. Here is my final result:

(I used Funsize's 3rd grunge for this one)But now it still sucks, go to Filter/distort/Spherize to make it round, it blurs a bit so you don't need to blur later on.Then, if you want color, keep your selection open and perform an average color balance on your planet (in layer/new adjustment layer/color balance) One color is usually okay.
Now its still a puny little brushed circle and we'll fix that. Right click on your planet layer and go in your layer options. There, add a inside and outside glow with the same color. Here are my settings for the size of my sample:
If you want to make glow with a color make it a very light one and make both glows the same color. Here is about what you should have by now:
But its still not over yet! If you want to make it with a shadow it gets harder, it took me a while to find a way so the shadow doesn't freak up the glow but I found the way. Here goes: Make a new layer and grab the circular lasso once again. This time make a big circle on one side of your planet and fill it with black:
Notice the selection size? It must be bigger or as big as the planet or else the shadow will seems like it glows and it will freak up.Now deselect your circle, select your circle layer and go to filter/blur/gaussian blur and select the blur strenght according to your planet size. After that, you might consider going into your shadow's layer options and add a drop shadow, it will make the border between glow and shadow smoother and you can use that to fix your shadow if you made your circle too small earlier. In the end you should come up with this:
Note that the color, texture and shadow is all up to you. Hope you liked this tut. Now after someone bumps this, I will add another tut that was rotting in my workshop.

You can start off doing some faint color balance so it isn't completely B&W. See color balance tut.
Then the sweet stuff comes in, make a color balance layer with the color you want your stains to be and then fill in the color balance layer with black using the paintbucket. Now it should look exactly as before you did the color balance. After this, select your color blalance layer and grab some good grunge brushes and start brushing in white in the location you want your stains to be, the shape of the brushes will make the stains so make sure it fits.As usual do not overbrush or you will end up with something bad. Do it with moderation and it should be okay. Here's my end sample:
