I think Crystal would be the best starting point to start. Personally I started from Gold, but meh.

I'd have to say Pokemon Yellow. Includes most of the original pokemon without the complexity of crystal and later versions.

Most older pokemon games would be real hard to find anymore. Meaning if you are looking to get Original Red, Blue, Yellow, Gold, Silver or Crystal; have a blast because you will be searching until your mind breaks.. unless you go to a game selling website such as ebgames.com and look on there, but there is no guarentee that the games will -work- when you get them. Now as for Ruby, Sapphire, Fire Red, Leaf Green and Emereald, go to your local toy store and you should find those right on the shelf of their respective system. Now if you are looking for a pokemon game for a console system, try Pokemon Stadium for the nintendo 64. I heard that it is quite good. As for Gamecube, there are two that I have personally found to be very fun. Pokemon Stadium and Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness.

I agree with Fighter1. It's how I got started. To really appreciate newer Pokémon games, you have to know how they started.
