I say LeafGreen or FireRed because they have easy story lines to follow and the pokemon are more basic near the begining then they get more advanced. Its like two games in one.

red/blue/yellow they have the least features, and therefore the simpliest to learn. Start where everyone else started. Oh, and make sure they don't choose charmander, he's the hardest to use in the beginning... (rock, water first two gym leaders... misty is KILLER against charmander)

I agree blue and red are the ones to start with, they have the story line and teach you how to play the game. Well that is..

Just start with the latest. Emerald isn't bad, and unless you already found it, the earlier ones aren't always "clean" cartridges. Pokemon Dungeon isn't a regular Pokemon RPG so don't start with it. Pokemon Diamond and Pearl is coming as well.

I'd start with a first generation Pokemon game because they're much easier.

I suggest you start with the first one's in the series and go from there. Although the graphics are not that "pretty" it starts you off easy into the series. As you go through gold/silver then crystal more features are added. Ruby,Emerald add more thing to the fix and look alot better. And finally pokemon firered and leaf green bring the series back to the orginal setting but include all the features that came thoughout the series and some extra stuff as well.

Get yellow, kids will enjoy it because pikachu follows you and you can see its emotions. A thrill for little ones, or another choice would be emerald, will have them playing for a long time.

Go classic. Start with Red/Blue. Or Ruby and Sapphire weren't too bad.

First game I played in the series was Pokémon Red. I haven't played the newer ones though, but I can atleast tell you not to start with Pokémon Yellow, having Pikachu following you everywhere is really annoying.

Lads and Lassies, my personal favorite POkemon game, is good ol' Yellow. I remember when I beat down Yahoo auctioners left and right to get Pokemon Yellow cheaper than 75 bucks. Was, indeed, the best game ever. The rest are too ..... weird.

I've always found red, blue, and yellow as a good starter game because it is so simple and can teach you how to use the system in the game.
