The original ones, of course. Then you keep going up instead of going down, so you'll enjoy more games.

THE BEST GAME TO START OF WITH WOULD HAVE TO BE POKEMON RUBY. ITS COLOURFUL AND BRINGS EXCITMENT TO EVERY PERSON WHO FIRST PLAYS ITS. ALSO THE STORY LINES IS AWSOMELY SET OUT IT IS THE IDEAL POKEMON GAME TO PLAY FOR STARTERS OF THE POKEMON GAMING WORLD. POINTS were deducted for this post by xenos219

In case anyone is still refering to this thread for advice on which Pokemon game to start with, I suggest Yellow (especially if it's for the kids). Look! I even have logic to follow!Yellow has only 150 (ONLY!?) Pokemon, so your kid(s) won't be completely overwhelmed (obsessed) with the prospect of catching them all. Besides, if they move on to Silver/Gold/Crystal, I'm sure they'll enjoy the story continuation. I say yellow over red or blue partially because of the little yellow fluffball that follows you throughout the game. I'm sure kids would get a kick out of that. They did when I played it. But yellow was the first to feature different colors, which would help lasso a youth's attention (red and blue had color, but it was only red and blue, respectively). That's my opinion.

I say the originals (red/blue/yellow) because the starting pokemon are better. I really don't like the choices in Sapphire/Ruby because it's either all grass, water/ground, and fire/fighting(or ground). That's like starting with a Gloom, Wooper, and a Hitmochan that knows firepunch.

FireRed and LeafGreen are great starters for pokemon because they have the ingame help, but I would also suggest the original games because of their simplicity. Its better to play old to new than new to old.

If you are going to buy a Pokemon game, then you have to start with the Original Red or Blue version. They need to know the origin of the great Game!

Yellow or Crystal. All pokemon from 252+ are all trash. Crystal got shining pokemon so its pretty cool. Nice to collect them but hard as hell to find.

I think that Leafgreen would be good to start with, because the items would be up-to-date for a beginner to fiddle with, and its still got the majority of the original pokemon in it, so they're not catching up from scratch, necessarily. And the graphics are better, so beginners aren't turned off by an ugly palette.

Yeah the first generation is where it all began! I like Blue better, but only because that's the version I got first. All the newer pokemon are just building off the original two.
