I think the best would be Pokemon LeafGreen or Crystal Version. In both games, you don't only travel to one reigon, but to other several reigons as well. But if your age is less than 8, it's batter to start with Pokemon Mystery Dungeon (For some reason, I really like the game!). It's better to start knowing Pokemon as "playable friends" rather than knowing tham as "fighting characters".. . .If you age is less than 8, that is.

Pokemon Crystal was a good game to start with. But I started with Pokemon Pikachu Edition.

I was going to say the original Red/Blue versions, but if they don't have a gameboy older than a DS then they can't play them.otherwise, Fire Red/Leaf Green are good

I prefer Pokemon FireRed or Green Leaf. The game helps you out every step on your journey and would be good for a small child.

Stick with the basics of red and blue or you could go for the new version of red and blue which is fire red and leaf green.

I would say Gold/Silver.I started with those games and found them rather fun. Both have better graphics than RBY but they are not as complicated as RSE and DP.

I'd say Fire Red/Leaf Green. The originals are okay, but in case you're a girl or you just like good graphics, the remakes are probably the better choice.
