If you play them the whole way up your bound to get tired of playing one through ... spending weeks on it ... then restarting. I'd agree with the people saying fire red and leaf green. a lot like the originals plus better color, then the Ruby Saph or Emerald

I would say Pokemon Fire Red or Leaf Green. Although, I have friends who started with Diamond/Pearl and are doing fine.

I really say that Pokémon Emerald is a great game for anyone to start thing's with and i think that Pokémon Pearl/Diamond is good as well but many computers can't emulate it well so i choose Emerald!

Why have mince when you can have steak? Play Fire Red/Leaf Green instead of Red/Blue. They provide the same intro to the story, but they're better games.

I think that is they had a better version of Crystal it would sell very nicely, The Pokemon in Crystal are much more varied and aren't limited to the slightly boring originalsNeed a good one for the kids - where to start?
