I've always gone with the water type... maybe its just a habit, Squirtle, Totodile, Mudkip. Mudkip gets the electric resistance when t evolves (It's just Water in Mudkip stage, not Water/Ground), Treecko I don't really like that much coz it doesn't really learn any good grass attacks except for Leaf Blade,a nd Torchic... way overrated... but still, like others have said already, it is pretty hard to find a good fire type in the game, i'd go for Camerupt if you can be bothered to train it, it takes aaages to train...

Well, Torchic is the best choise, because Blaziken is the best result, but Mudkip and Treecko aren't bad too.

Pert is considered the best, followed by Sceptile, then Blaziken.In-game, any of them works.
Yeah, considering there aren't good fire pokémon.. =xTorchic because Blaziken is one of the best fire pokemon.

Since I can't decide I'll put my reason:Torchic: Pro: Okay for beginning, good looking final form, best fire in the game. Con: Not the best defence, more of a fighting type and mostly weak against final two leaders and elite four.Treeko: Pro: Speedy, high special attacks, good for the elite four Con: Limited move pool can only learn two grass moves by level up(absorb, leafblade),low defenceMudkip: good for beginning, only one weakness, good defence, can learn a lot of HMs becomes more earth, lower special attack, one mega drain can destroy you and slowest of the starters

When I player emerald in a emulator, I traded to get all the starters. When I was younger, and actually seriously played these games, I always started with fire types. Forget its name so less evolved form of charizard, and Cyndaquil.

mudkip, but, all of them suck other than Treeko for later cause Rival uses it and its a pain in the donkey as a Grovle

Ehh..............Torchic for just beating the game. You'd definitely want to look at others for competitive battling though. Treecko's final evolution isn't too bad, depending on how you use it.

i will choose mudkip, for he is immune to electric, but make sure he has an ice attack like ice beam , to make sure that he cover his weakness to grass

Torchick is the best! i lik it cause i never get bored training it also i always evolve my torchick into combusken when i batlle roxanne (rock gym 1st gym)

in pokemon i usually pick the water-type starter(squirtle, totodile)...but for some reason the ruby/saphire/emerald series made me pick treeko as my starter the first time i played it...in my opinion torchic is good but over-rated too...
