Cyndaquil because of hs evolutions. But if it was in red or blue, i would pick bulbasaur because grass is good against Brock, Misty, and Lt. Surge.

Totodile (mine was called Tritonus). He's just one of my favorites.

I choose Cyndaquil, because is a fire-type and is the stronger pokemon of starter.

I didn't play Crystal a lot, but I chose Totodile the first time. then Cyndaquil.

I picked Cyndaquil, but not because I felt some sort of affinity for it but rather due to process of elimination. I dislike Totodile and despise Chikorita.

the d.p starter's english names are turtwig for the grass turle. chimchar for the fire monkey. and piplup for the penguin. the second evolutions are grotle as in grow and turtle, monferno as in monkey and inferno, and prinplup as in prince and plup. the third evolution names are torterra as in tortoise and terra, infernape as in inferno and monkey, and empolean as in emporer and the famous french general napolean.

I chose cyndaquil because the firsit bunch of wild is mainly bug type so cyndaquil is easy to train.

I would choose Piplup because its final form is part steel. It's only weak to fighting and electric (I think), and it probably has an advantage against the rival. Piplup is also the only starter that looks nice. It should probably learn some nice attacks because of its dual-type. But Chimchar is the Diamond/Pearl form of Blaziken in Ruby/Saphire/Emerald, so it's a hard choice.

Which leaves Fire easiest to start with but harder to finish and water is gonna be a harder game all around.(To the post) I think I'm going to start with grass for the first time thru but after i get to know the game i'm going to switch it up.generally speaking its easiest to start with a grass pokemon and hardest to start with a fire pokemon and water is somewhere in the middle...but usually the fire pokemon at level 100 will be stronger than a level 100 grass pokemon (and i dont mean because of the type advantage)But i dont know about the gym leaders in diamond and pearl yet so i might be completely wrong :-)
