does anyone know which actually has the best overall stats, at, say, lvl 50?

Torchic all the way... Make sure you get a female torchic, or else you can't breed a dozen of them

That's why you trade a Ditto from Fire Red/Leaf Green..........

In emerald the legendary is water (sorry if im wrong its been a while but i'm pretty sure that emerald) So if you choose grass the rival chooses fire and while it may be a hard start I say that at the end you are very strong with this as long as you get the legendary with the master ball from the rockets base

Actually, you get both legendaries in Emerald (you're thinking about Sapphire). It's just that you can't get them until after defeating the Elite Four, so that's not especially useful if you plan on using a legendary against them.Besides, your rival isn't THAT difficult to defeat, so I don't see why that should factor into your considerations.

Is torchic an emerald? What do you mean by that? I thought the only emeralds are mentioned in Sonic X animated TV show.
