It depends on what kind of challenge I want. I never got too deep into Pokemon, so I never cared about putting them up with moves that would trump another player. I never played against anyone else, so I never needed to hone my skills in that case. I usually chose Charmander since I wanted the most challenge. Remember, this is before they had Metal Claw, so you couldn't learn that and use it to defeat Brock. You had to depend on the Pokemon that you captured in the forest.

I like Squirtle as my first starter Pokemon. It has higher defense than the other two red/blue/yellow starters. Hydro pump alone makes it worth while to raise. Also good water Pokemon were pretty scarce in R/B/Y days. Most of them had poor stats or a second type added to them that gave them an extra weakness so a pure Water Pokemon is pretty use full. Also it's the only starter aside from Pikachu in that era that didn't have a second type with it's final evolution. I can understand how people like Bulbasaur since it's easier to beat the first couple of gyms with it. The downside to bulbasaur comes later in it's life though. Sure it can learn Earthquake and do some serious damage to fire and poison types it wouldn't do anything to Charizard as it's a Fire/Flying type so if it's a starter Pokemon battle between them then it will still lose regardless.

>:3 Mudkip has always been my favourite starter. He can learn ground moves once he's evolved to Swampert, and when you're faced with an electric opponent and pull a ground move out of nowhere, BAM. It always hits 'em pretty hard.

i would say Squirtal because it can learn surf and strenth and the n if u catch the legendary birds then u can teach the fly and. and iu use charmander or Bulbasaur your fairly whooped for surf which u use the most(red/blue/leafgreen)

pokemon red/blue/yellow squirtle pwned coz he could use ice beam and now more decent moves, like earthquake. worst was pikachu... do i need to explain (if it was able to learn surf, different story!)pokemon gold/silver/ crystal this is the series that i can't remember that well. i hope heart gold and soul silver can fix this loss.pokemon sapphire/ruby/emerald the best was mudkip, he can use interesting double battle combos. worst was treecko, what a snotball! a better grass pokemon in that series would have to be cacturne (4 me anywayz)pokemon diamond/pearl/platinum TURTWIG ALL THE WAYZ!!! give torterra a rock move and it covers all weaknesses (fire/flying/ice/bug) then give it E.Quake, Leaf Storm and some other move of choice (probably crunch, photosyntheses or leech seed for me) and it owns heavy. the worst was Piplup, not very versatile and there are better water pokemon (gyarados anybody?) but it does have the best colour scheme in terms of shiny pokemon (ice blue with the slightest hint of green... awesome)

I like either Chimchar or Piplup because you can pretty much get a good stat set with them and they're useful for just wiping the floor with the first couple gym leaders.

chimchar for couple reasons1. graphically, he looks pretty cool2. possibly the easiest fire starter to use in any of the generations3. all-out offensive machine, which i like3a. can go both ways, unlike other attacks (physical and special)4. its a flaming monkey. nuff saidhowever, charizard is just awesome

any of the fire type starters are good because of the movesets they have and they way they level up. If I had to pick one it would be chimchar with the fight/fire combo status I was unbeat.

I actually prefer Bulbasaur--in the old games--mostly because it makes the first gym battles fairly easy, and once you start to have a type disadvantage, you'll already have other pokemon to cover it anyway. Bulbasaur also does better in the starting battle with Gary than charmander does. He also evolves sooner, and, most importantly, he learns a sleep move that is better than hypnosis, which is good for catching and battling if you really need it. It also looks alot better than the other starters.

Torterra, any pokemon that would be super effective against it is made regularly effective by its controversial types
