Charmander is definitely the best to start. People say that Misty will give you troubles but that's easily avoided by:a) Catching a Pikachu in Viridian Forestb) Catching an Abra north of Cerulean and evolving into Kadabraor even c) Get a Butterfree and raise it well

Red/Blue I go for bulbasaur. he is a bit tougher than the other 2, but mainly, Razor Leaf is just such a powerful move.Gold/Silver/Crystal Definitely todadile, with no competition. Bite plows through ghost and physic types, and his water/physical pretty much destroy everything else. His attack and defense are higher than the rest too.

Pokemon Yellow: Definitely Pikachu... Coz, let's face it... You don't have a choice!!!But seriously...R/B: Bulbasaur. Coz he can easily defeat the 1st 3 gym leaders.G/S/C: Cynaquil is the best, plus Typlosion is just so darn cool.R/S/E: My fave here is Mudkip. No reason, I just love him coz he's cute. :DDon't have D/P yet, but I hear Piplup ia awesome.

Turtwig, cause he can evolve and learn earthquake making only charizard his equal opponent from starters. Plus i think Torterra just looks awesome.

I always started with Bulbasaur. Charmander was pretty effective toward the middle and the end of the game though. Squirtle was all around pretty useless...

Yea i agree. Swampart maxed EVs is quite awesome, with muddy water... u noeMudkip. Swampert has good defenses and very good attack power and he only has 1 real weakness.

mudkip is pretty versatile because it makes up for being a water type whick normally be weak to electric by being a ground type too which makes it all better. So does cyndaquil because it evolves into a typhlosion which can learn thunder punch solving the whole water weakness problem when you back that up with some speed.

I like turtwig, the final evolution makes it look like an turtle with an island at the back, that looks so cool, it can also learn some really cool moves like Earthquake which kills fire pokemon.. awesome!! But it's stats are not the best among all starters..
When the going gets tough, the tough goes shopping...

In terms of aesthetics, I'd go for Cyndaquil. My favourite is Chikorita, since it was the first I ever picked. But 'Best'...probably...Charmander. Seemed like the easiest to raise when I played through with it.

Charizard is my favourite. :] I usually stick to fire starters, but I didn't like the fire starter from Sinnoh region.

I think in general the best starting pokemon are the grass type pokemon because they are easy to raise and have the most advantages in gym battles. I don't like the water pokemon because in my opinion, they take more effort to raise. The fire pokemon are a little bit different. When i played a game with a fire starter i figured out that brute forcing my way through the game was the optimal strategy. So in conclusion I think Grass starters are better because they are more balanced

THe first pokemon game I played was blue, and I grew up watching pokemon when the indigo plateau journey was new. And since then I have bought every single game except for yellow, and watched the series until they moved to cartoon network. During all my years of dealing with pokemon I would say the best is charmander. That is my pick because it is the best logical choice but because I am a fanboy when it comes to charmander, charmeleon, and charmizard. I dont care what anyone says I will always say that charmander is the best starter pokemon in the whole history of the pokemon franchise.

I love the original 150 so I'll go with Bulbasaur since Venasuar had the solar Beam attack.

If it was by best starter pokemon, then i would pick cyndaquil. If by region then of course the johto region because it has awesome pokemon and the fact that it has cyndaquil
