I go for charmander->charmeleon->charizard because he is the strongest in my opinion, also the coolest :) .

The best pokemon to start with is always the grass type.. for one thing there always the strongest, and for another theres no other decent grass pokemon in any of the games lol

I liked Chikorita, but heck, I have to admit openly that Charmander was a lot stronger in the last stage, especially in FRLG. Blast Burn, Flamethrower are all equally broken anyway. But other than your starter pkmn, there aren't many pro Grass types running around. sheesh, do them some justice will ya?Steel types are cooler in looks though, Scizor especially...just love him.

I like bulbasaur... There weren't enough good earth/nature based pokemon IMO, so starting out with Bulb was a good way to ensure that you would have a nice one :)

Well, that depends on the stratagy and game. In Red and Blue, Bulbasaur can mop the floor with the first two gym leaders, and be pretty decent against the third, but will have trouble against the frequent Pidgeys and Spearows in the first area. However, when you rival brings up charmander, you won't have any real advantage until you reach Mt Moon, where you can score a Geodude or Onix, to at least resist his fire techniques at high enough level, but you won't learn any rck techniques until about the time you fight Misty. Your Charmander if you choose it, will shred through the wild grass pokemon, but you'll need a Butterfree to properly combat Brock, and a Pikachu to combat your Rival's Squirtle. You'll also need to eithe make your pikachu very strong, or have to rely onf bird and bug pokemon against misty, because you won't have anything else.A squirtle is a fair choice, and you should'nt have much if any problems against most pokemon until after Cerrulean city, except the occasional Bellsprout or Oddish, and of course your rival's bulbasaur. Train up a butterfree to take care of them(confusion will work against the type two poisen type they all have, and grass techniques don't really work well against bug OR flying), and a Geodude or Onix to take care of Lt. Surge's Raichu, then you should be set from there on out.As for Gold, Silver, and Crystal, I would suggest taking Cyndaquil, which won't have any real weaknesses until you get to the Whirl Islands, in the caves, and against Clair's Kingdra. You'll have to make sure to score a Bellsprout or Oddish for Bellosom early on though in order to counter against Rival's Totodile. If you choose Totodile, you'll have a problem against grass pokemon like Oddish and bellsprout, but fortunatly, their levels out in the wild are often ten levels at least, below yours, and Mareep I don't think gets any electric attacks until a higher level than you can find them below Violet town.If you choose Bayleaf, you are going to have a hell of a time. Not only will all the flyers around you, no matter how weak, cause quite an annoyance with the slightest Gust, Bayleaf will also suck against the first two Gym trainers, as well as the fourth. And getting a rock pokemon like Onyx won't help tremendously against Mud Slap from the first Gym either.I have'nt played anything beyond Crystal....All in all, I'd have to say, Grass is best for the first series, while Fire is the worst. In the second, it's the other way around. This is of course, based on it's values, as a STARTING pokemon in the game. If you want to ask which of them is the best period, I would have to go with either Blastoise, or Venusaur, in terms of statistics, and moves naturally learned.
