Square had a big task in following up the friggin sublime FF6, especially being a very high profile release on the playstation. So they came out with one of the most epic and cinematic games ever released up until that time.It's a treasure. If you're trying to pick it up now, putting it up against current and next-gen games, it's obviously going to look dated. But look at it in context.

True the character development and story isnt that obvious if you just plow through but thats what makes it interestin to many as they can think up how they think the story is going, or why the characters do what they do. The characters development for the majority give you the background so you can get an idea of who they are. Cause of this you find lots of forums talkin bout it cause everyone got their own interpretations.Also ive just fin playin through it again and the graphics realy arnt that bad once you get goin.

Though the graphics in FF8 were slightly more realistic, especially conerning character size (and the HANDS...) I still enjoyed the playstyle of 7 more, especially with the materia system. It was far to easy to become god-like in FF8 while still sitting in or around balamb garden, and I did appreicate the storyline from FF8, but 7 just appealed to me more. Perhaps its just myself, but regardless of how old it is, Ive never minded going back to whoop up on sephiroth now and again.

I would rather play FF6 then 7. people go on about how it had the best story but the FFs before it trump it in all possible ways. the only thing it has going for it is it's graphics, which for it's time wasn't even that good. nostalgia is overrated.

First, you don't need character development to have good characters. Characters can be interesting and likable without 'growing' during a game. And most games that have 'strong' character development, have heavily cliched means of achieving it-amnesia, abandonment issues that won't allow him/her to get close to anyone, etc. It's easy to develop characters when they're crippled at the start of the game.Second, about variety. Why would someone feel it's a loss to lose a few unique abilities per character in exchange for unlimited freedom in customizing characters however you like? Not to mention that the materia system has a limitless number of possible combinations. I outfitted characters in so many incredible ways near the end of the game it was mind blowing. No system before or since has the variety that the materia system has. And characters still have different stats, making them more suitable to certain styles, so they are differentiated on top of their limit breaks.Third, about the story. Maybe it wasn't your cup of tea. Fine, everyone has different tastes. But it was by far the most ambitious and clever story ever developed, destroying the basic fantasy fare that virtually every game to that point had used. And fourth, I don't know what you were playing in 1997, but this game was BY FAR the best looking RPG ever at that time, and one of the best looking games period, rivalled only by Resident Evil and a couple others. FF7 plot owns. really excellent. the gameplay was excellent too. but i didn't like the gore. lol some may think that it was nothing, but i was young and i played the game during the night....
