I'll be honest, I've liked Mario ever since Donkey Kong Jr. (yes, the game in which he was the villain!). The sheer versatility of the face, and the idea that the average Joe like Mario Mario could rise up and be a hero, makes the games a great thing. After all, how many VG leads do you know with potbellies, that aren't constantly harangued about it? Exactly. And about the idea of "phasing in" other characters? They've tried. The games are called Mario is Missing (a Broderbund edutainment game that I loved), Super Princess Peach, Super Mario World 2 - Yoshi's Island, Yoshi's Safari, and Luigi's Mansion. I'm not going to count Warioland or WarioWare in there because Wario Land was actually Super Mario Land 3 (for GB!), and WarioWare has, thankfully, found its niche and thrived. There's only one problem. None of those games (outside of Yoshi's Island, which shouldn't be included for the same reason Wario Land isn't being included, really), did very well - nor have they fared well in nostalgia. I point you no further than the "Weegee" meme for proof of that.No. Gamers look to Mario as a personal hero, not a corporate shill. He was there when we were children, and his enthusiastic "here we go!" is as much a clarion call to us as it is to our children and their children after them. He'll outlive us all.

I agree with you. In the 90's or during the console wars with sega and nintendo, there was also the mascot wars on who can outdo sonic and mario's fame. I believe the outcome shows as hardly anyone remembers boogerman even among gamers. Up to this day, a lot of my former co office worker who is not a gamer knows mario instead of sonic.

do you think nintendo should stop making mario games and focus on making a new mascot? Another question would be what would that say about nintendos reputation?PS gotta leave will edit the thread to clarify my questions

No Mario is a classic why would you want to get rid of Mario. I don't expect Mario to retire any time soon.

I like Mario myself; his character and world are well-defined, with not too many pointless characters, and not too many contradictions. Like, where did Luigi's lightning powers from Superstar Saga go? and that sort of thing. An interesting question, though, would be this: if Mario was replaced, what or who would replace him?

i think mario is a great tool for introducing young people into the world of gaming, yet it's also fun for even more advanced gamers.. an overall well-rounded series of games.

I don't even think that will happen..considering all the new games with Mario still in them, not to mention he himself is a classic so his legacy will more than likely go on.

If the games started declining, I might say yes, but New Super Mario Bros. for the DS was wonderful as was Super Paper Mario and both Super Mario Galaxy games. I'd say stop making more ******* Mario Party games though.Sonic, there's a character who may need retirement, if he weren't the only real character Sega had left and they weren't still raking in money off him.
