...But how do you make a good render? Do you need to cut it out a certain way? Or add effects to it? It's one of the few concepts I can't quite grasp...

there are different ways to make a render. Some use a blur, some add a glow on the outside. It all depends on the actual renderer.

A good render is something easy to use and simple. Something that can be transformed by the users. Good renders must be of good quality, good size (the bigger the better since reducing size can be done and increasing reduces quality) and good cut. To make good cuts, there are few ways I know: pen tool, polygon lasso. (NEVER RENDER A PIC WITH THE MAGIC WAND) Feathering the end result will make the borders of the render smoother so it can be ok. But try to edit the render as little as possible.
