When Mr. Burns apparently sets off a nuclear reaction in one of the reactor cores of the Power Plant in the past (30 years in the past), he calls Walyon Sr. in to tell him what's wrong (the flashing lights and blaring alarms are confusing him). Waylon offers to go into the containment chamber and stop the core from blowing up to save his son (who he hands to Burns). He is able to stop the core from melting down, but he is killed by radiation poisoning in the end (he collapses, sheds his hair, etc.)
