In terms of originality, shock factor, edge of your seat factor: DIGITAL DEVIL SAGA. A world called the junkyard where clans obliterate each other so that only one will remain to achieve nirvana. Till one day a girl came to the world and everyone obtained the ability to become devils. To top it off, they're starting to grow their own distinct personality from a more robotic sentry like personality early in the game. Everything, including the ending of the first game will make you question the world of junkyard and what is nirvana. And when you found out about it, "how could that world be that way" is what will come to mind at the start of the second game.

For me it would be the Final Fantasies ( Mostly VII, IX and X), both Golden Suns and Tales of Symphonia with all its twists.

Hands down final fantasy 7 had the best rpg storyline, so many twist n turns, never knew what was gonna happen next without getting rediculous

Disgaea had such a fun storyline. Even though the story was pretty straight forward and cliché, the moment to moment conversations were some of the best I have seen in a RPG. Earthbound was very good too for the same reason, though its storyline was a lot more ridiculous on a whole. As far as pokémon go, you got to wonder what its like to live in that world and be in a non pokémon related profession, the cycling shop guy. Like when people are talking about where they work,"Oh I'm a pokémon photographer, this is Jake he's a pokemon trainer working on his forth badge, thats Sarah, she is a pokemon hairstylist and thats Tom, he works in poketelevison, what do you do?" "I sell bicycles."Or worse, a pokemon is discovered who somehow specializes in bicycle based attacks and can repairs in its spare time bikes. You are out of work, just like the firemen.

Best story I've ever heard/played was Legacy of Kain: Blood Omen. It's a really old game, but I liked and played it numerous times becauseof its story.

In all honesty, I have to go with Xenosaga. I know a lot of people who are Xeno fans prefer Gears to Saga, but I honestly think Saga had the better story. I think it is easily one of the best narratives I've ever seen done in a video game.

I think that Chrono Cross has the best story line so far. It's neat to see both sides of the choices people can make

i'ld agree with some that the final fantasy series has the best story lines ever generated for any console, ff 7&8 being my favorites. also, another good game with excelent storylines would be the kingdom hearts series

Eh, don't really like most RPG stories because they are so predictable. FF 7 was pretty nice. At least what I've read on online boards, I didn't understand half of it while playing because of the HORRIBLE, GODAWFUL translation. I guess, Live-A-Life was pretty cool. Sure, every single story was rather mediocre but overall I liked it with it's obscurity.
