Personally, I've decided that the two are too different to try and pick one that is better. Melee is nothing like the original. The original was a cartoony brawlfest between Nintendo characters, and had a distinct balanced feel to it. Melee is a more realistic, frantic, crazy fighter with tons of options and more luck/realism. Personally, I think the original is more balanced and requires more skill, while Melee is more for just plain fun and crazy matches. I like them both, but not for the same reasons. They are very different.

Melee, It's got better GFX, more characters, items, fun, etc. I'm not sure why anyone would even like SSB more than SSBM

The N64 version is too short so I say Melee is better.

I have played both games, I find Super Smash on the Nintendo 64 to be a classical game of this console. The down side of this game is the lack of characters and maps. Even if the graphics aren't really that great but this game stays a great melee game in which you can just bash at your enemy for fun. Super Smash Brothers on the Gamecube is a great amelioration to that classic. They added a great number of characters and maps in which you can play. You can simply play for fun or try to finish the whole ''campaign'' in which you can win all the missing characters and maps that can be unlocked in a multiple of ways. I find those two games to be a great party games. They are superb.

Melee is better since it has improved graphics, more areas and extras. The N64 version was a great game and Melee is like an improvement.

Melee is better, in my opinion. I've played the out of both games and it's hard for me to go back to the old one after playing Melee.

I believe that melee is far superior due to the more intense competetive nature.

Melee of course. It's just like the original...only more levels more characters more variety in attacks more things to do more unlockables longer playability...it came out what? 5-6 years ago and people are STILL playing it how many still play the original? bet you not even a quarter of the people who play melee ...and on a side note...brawl is gonna be so awesome...yet they are getting carried away with it....Pikmin and Olimar are in it...as a playable character...they are getting ridiculous now...but anyway melee is way better but the original was still mind blowing

Also, there is more time in the air to use aerial attacks, because in Melee, the falling is more realistic, with acceleration as you fall towards the ground.

quicker gameplay. if every game was pretty much in slow-mo, even noobs would destroy us.

Yeah, but I like the physics from the first Smash Bros. When you did a slash from Link's sword, like in middair, it felt heavy and powerful, you know? It felt like you just killed somebody. But in Melee, if you do that same move, it feels flimsy, like a rapier or fencing sword, but it to has its cool swordplay in its on way, too.I like it when you clash swords, and you hear that *ting* sound if they hit at the same time. And they have different sounds if you clash swords in succession. very hard to do, but so cool when you do.

i like melee better. super smash 64 was the original and although it's golden, i think that melee is more entertaining. it's harder and there's more stages ad characters.
