I don't know exactly why. Anime has a different drawing style than American cartoons. Animes just seem a lot more mature in terms of content. I'd rather watch an anime with tits and swearing than watch an American Cartoon which is just stupid humour. Anime too is more about story generally and not about creating a laugh riot. By the way... we all like anime so calm down and just "praise anime."

grew up watching Saint Seiya, followed by Dragon Ball - these were all on late night TV. They were much more interesting than the Disney variety at the time... Looking back - the drawing style was intriguing, but nothing fancy compared with the modern variety anime or Pixar, even the storyline Seiya feels so slow (but somehow I was attached and still am). These days its much easier to flick on TV to watch Family Guy etc. (which I don't mind), but would choose Doraemon or the like if I had the choice. Aimed at more mature audience? no, but its got more substance

I don't think anime is better or worse than American cartoons, just that each has their own specific niche. American cartoons should really stick to their strengths, which are humor and violence. That's what made Tom and Jerry, Looney Tunes, and even some of the early Mickey Mouse cartoons popular. It's what makes shows like Rocko's Modern Life, Ren and Stimpy, and Invader Zim a step up form other older shows. I feel anime has action down pat, and can stick well to that. I don't think anime-esque action should be emulated in American cartoons. I respect both, but value each for their own reasons.Anime just has more action, and is better put together in the long-run. People aren't all concerned with making money with the show, unlike the capitalistic US. Then again, I'm probably wrong in that statement.Edit: Dang censorship ruins many good cartoons. The US does censor too much.

I don't know about you, but I find it irritating when people phrase opinion as fact (thread title).American cartoons in the 80s and 90s were far better developed than most anime. The animation was much less shallow. Characters didn't look "plastic," and actually showed some movement and expression. It wasn't all "pauses" like in modern anime, where everyone just strikes some sort of pose while their mouth opens and closes. And how can anyone say that animes have better scripts than American cartoons? Yes, they typically have a progressing storyline, while a lot of American shows were just canon and only used events from previous episodes as guidelines to prevent continuity errors. But frankly, what I hate most about anime is the dialogue. Maybe it's just the translation, but my god... I just wanna stab them in the throat sometimes. Do the writers think their audience is full of idiots? Do the characters really have to explain what's going on over and over again, speaking - just - slowly - enough - so - we - can - hear - every - word? WE GET IT. SHUT UP. MOVE ON. Frankly, it's just lazy writing. It's filler. It's to compensate for a lack of script which would normally maintain the show for a decent length of time.As for America's supposed "shallow humor": Say what you want, but I know a lot more people who find Simpsons, Futurama, and Family Guy to be much funnier than any anime they've seen. I don't see what's funny about characters falling over, or their mouth and eyes going huge and blank, or the token bead of sweat on the back of their heads. Fact of life: Sex is funny. For a society that's supposed to be less prudish than the West, the Japanese certainly don't seem to understand that. It's a shame that so many modern American cartoons are just shallow anime knockoffs. But, who can blame them. This is what kids watch these days.

Well, not to say that there's any excuse for any of it, but American cartoons aren't all that sucky, if you're talking about the sexual and political cartoons, such as South Park and Family Guy, then they aren't aimed to entertain with action or story, they're there JUST for the laughs. And as the first poster suggested, anime isn't all cut and clean either. I mean, just look at let's say.. Bleach, Hitsugaya's Vice-Captain, Rangiku has breasts that would render her unable to fight. I mean LOOK AT THOSE THINGS. Inoue is another perfect example. How can she run!?Let's go to Naruto, Haku + Zabuza = huge homosexual overtones.Kakshi's first attack was the 1000 years of pain. Eck.DBZ blood, blood, blood, and more blood. Not that one is better than the other, but they are created for different purposes. Anime is there to entertain, it fills many, many functions, moving stories, entertaining dialogue, etc. (Puny Puny Poemy, hilarious!) American cartoons are typically about pleasing an adult audience. And adults don't look to cartoons for plot and emotion. So in closing: They both suck. =) Gimme some animated movies.

It is for two reasons, 1st, The character design and 2nd, The storyline.I'm sorry to say this but, some times the storyline isn't really making sense. How come that if you fall from a very high building , you're not dead but instead, your body break away and then joined again. I know it's funny, but it really doesn't make sense...

I'm a big fan of anime but I don't think a general comparison of Anime and American cartoons is fair however I do see some merits in Anime that is sorely lacking in American cartoons and vice versa.Anime Pros1) Thought-provoking and profound Story Arcs (best examples for me are :Monster,Tsukihime,Evangelion) or stories that are just out of the box (example:Haruhi)2) Excellent Artwork although the bug-eyed trend seems to be predominant3) Voice Acting4) Fluid Action Sequences (my favorite example: Hellsing)5) A lot are directed at older audiences6) Interesting charactersAnime Cons1) The motivation of the characters are sometimes stated too explicitly2) Some use the flashback extensively (example: a lot of shonen)3) Some have Unnecessarily oversexed women while others seem to be animated fetishes (again a lot of shonen)4) Too much philosophizing (this is usually the ailment of Anime with complicated story arcs)5) Ill-timed humor (again a lot of shonen)6) Well-made protagonists and supporting castAmerican Cartoon (those that don't attempt to imitate anime) Pros1) Different artwork styles2) Easily-accessible characters3) Well-timed Humor4) Some feature social commentary, in fact, some tread the line of propaganda5) Lots of stereotypical characters American Cartoon Cons1) They don't end2) A lot seem to target the 13 under bracket 3) Some characters seem too generic

american shows are not very good since they are made for kids, anime seeks to find an intersection that is crossed by all people of all ages, gender, sexual orientation and beliefsamerican cartoons play it too safeeditunless the cartoons were talking about are southpark and others of the same genre, those are cool for me

It depends on what other people's interest are. Not everyone think that anime is better than american cartoons. In my opinion, it has to do with more detailed drawing and storyline.

It usually has more action in it, which attracts attention to many teens....And probably because the drawings of characters are really good...

Simply...I like anime because I love it...it's theme...it's characters, names, age, faces and appearance over-all...I think it is also better because it has an original theme and topics which is unusual and sometimes weird...that's why it's the best and better than any cartoonn I've ever watched!!!^^,

Wow, that's a really stupid thing to say. You're generalizing against anyone who doesn't like anime, and that's not something you should be doing.I think the main reason that anime is liked by a lot of people is that it's not geared only for children. But I like the old cartoons, back in the 1940's on the Tex Avery show. Those were funny. Red Hot Riding Hood for instance, was hilarious if you knew what was going on. Hollywood and Vine street, the Grandma is a madam, and riding hood is supposed to be a stripper? I think that's a win. However, anime does have it's unique storylines that are just out of this world. I mean a story where a girl is basically God and doesn't know it? I think that's also a win. It all comes down to who they're marketing their shows to. Anime can be for older people so anyone over 13 can like it. That's not the case with american cartoons.
