I'd prefer the oldschool american cartoons. Give me the 90's Nicktoons, Rocko, Doug, and the non-Nick ones like Ninja Turtles and Looney Toons. Modern American cartoons suck, they are all bad mixes of anime and american toons. Loonatics unleased is probably one of the worst crimes against american cartoons ever.

American cartoons often have characters that ALWAYS WIN. They almost always win their battles and rarely have a change of clothes. In Anime the characters are more complex. Some evil characters aren't really like "Bwahaha i want to be evil because it's nice to be evil" They all have their own stories to tell. There's more spontaneity in anime, although it can also go too far.

Well, I thought of Family Guy when American cartoon was mentioned. DBZ is like the most American cartoons though where the good guy always wins, and its corny.Personally I prefer American comedy and Anime action

Anime is a lot better than american cartoon because the voice overs are more passionate and the drawings and animations are more original than the all american type. Also, Japanese anime is a lot more famous than any other country's.

well, japanese anime tend to hab a story rather than just being comical, I think most american cartoons are designed to be continued forever without an end

it is more than just art, it is a systematic way of drawing.

Hi.I'm new in this, I saw the discussion and I had an opinion about it, so there it is:(English is not my first language, so please, don't just stand my mistakes, tell me which they are so I can learn).I think that what make anime better than cartoons (I mean, American cartoons) is that Anime have a sense of the sacrifice.Look, for example, Clamp's anime: Magic Knight RayEarth or X. Or Rurouni Kenshin's Ovas. The sacrifice is the most touching action ever, cause this is the most unselfish thing anyone can do.I cry when Sorata says to Arashi he has made his mind up: he said to her that she is the one who he will give his life for. Or even when Inuki gives his life for Neko......... (I don't remember the name).well, that's my opinion.I don't think we, the western people in general, have that sense of the sacrifice.Maybe they're, the eastern people in general, are less selfish than we are.I don't know and this begins to seem a critic to the western culture, so maybe I should stop writing and just wait for your responses. Thanks for reading me.

ummm this is a tough question cause they both have their pros and cons...but even though i enjoy many japanese animated shows, i still like american cartoons.. The only reason this argument goes on is because mainly the good shows from japan get brought here and the sucky shows stay there.. (actually they need to bring Doraemon here hahaha or crayon shin-chan, or Urayasu Tekkin Kazoku but oh well,, those are aquired tastes haha) anyways, a lot of people who like japanese cartoons begin to sorta dislike them after actually going to japan because they realize that not ALL japanese animation is as good as they thought.

Well I think that is because anime can be aimed at any at anyone.

That's the funniest, most ignorant thing I've heard all day. Answer this, genius. If anime can be aimed at anyone, then why are the protagonists of the majority of anime always children or teenagers? In fact, anime goes out of its way to turn otherwise older characters into teenagers in order to aim their show at the teenage target audience. For example, there's an anime that debuted about a year ago about Greek gods, but they turned the main character (Loki) into a spiky-green haired teenager and gave him a "cool" look to get the kids watching. A timeless Greek god of trickery, turned into a metrosexual anime teenager. Surely, he's had better days. There is good Western style animation out there, you just need to ignore what is being shoved into your face and go look for it. Or maybe you shouldn't, because I doubt you could muster up enough openmindedness to appreciate something other than what you're used to. Which is in general, badly animated crap with fast action cuts to lower production cost and get adrenaline-addled kids hooked. (I'm not bashing all anime here, because I like alot of them myself. I just can't tolerate 90% of mainstream anime)Regarding Ifalna's post...I don't know about you, but everytime I've taken a overseas trip to general Asia, I am bombarded by incredible consumerism. I dare say many Asian countries (especially Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, and Singapore) seem far more materialistic and "selfish" than America could ever be. The streets are absolutely choke with hundreds of shops, and shops within shops within malls. It's crazy, and you have to see it to believe it. I'm not going to make judgements and say they actually are more selfish over there, but it's definitely a different level of widespread consumerism than seen stateside.

I wouldn't agree with you entirely kipple. Coming from South East Asia, i do admit that consumerism is widespread nowadays, however i wouldn't say that in Asian there's more consumersism and "selfishness"XD You have to understand that in Asia the widespread markets have ALWAYS BEEN HERE. With regards to being more materialistic and selfish, I think we can say that that isn't true. It generally boils down to our understanding of each others culture. What may seem selfish and concieted to others may be a norm for another culture. ( That doesn't really sound so good though XD )Yet it is this mixed ideas in culture that acutally shows in art, clothes style and eventually animation. Though i do prefer anime, everyone must also understand that the roots of anime come from France if i'm not mistaken. Watch the earlier japanese animation it isn't great either.Japanese animation owes a lot to western animation. In the end it really depends on one's own preference. XD The good thing though is that the sharing of opinions like this may us learn more about others

well, I think they all got their own uniqueness.for anime, they win with their cool character design and storyline, come on, I mean, how many types of anime we see compared to the american ones ?for american, i guess they win for their super-heroes, like X-Men, Justice League, etc.I like both actually XD

Well, I have changed my mind. Now I think the question is wrong. The problem is that you can't say Anime is better than Cartoons, or viceversa. It's just a generalization you can't do. You can't take Marvel and DC's cartoons, in a hand, and Futurama and the Simpsons, in the other, and give them a name to then judge them all. The same applies to anime. That's why I give examples of what I said.In general, I can't find sacrifices in cartoons. Actually, the death of a cartoon character is a rare event. Of course, Pikachu won't die neither.I like some cartoons, a lot, and some anime. However, I still think the best cartoons (in general, not american) are those like Kenshin and X, where there's people disposed to sacrifice their selves in order to protect something they love. Besides, there's a plus: in those cases, there is no good people and bad people, there's just people with some thoughts and desires and people with other thought and desires. Like in MAgic Knight RayEarth: who is the bad guy and who is the good one? You can't apply those predicates to them.

i think american cartoons is all weird childish "violence" and it's not funny after a while. on the other hand, anime has a huge story line going and you can't wait for the next episode or book because they have a good ending

I'd say because the artwork is a little better and more work is put into it.But what really pisses me off is when american cartoons are not as good as anime so they purposely make it look like an anime (i.e. Teen Titans) With Teen Titans, the animators purposely mess up the mouth motions to make it look like it wass made in japan. And don't give me that bullcrap of "well it really was drawn by asians". First of all, everything is drawn by asians! Really! Do you watch simpsons? Well son-of-a-gun, it's drawn by the koreans.

Anime is just much better, they contain feeling and itelligence unlike american cartoons. Although american cartoons are funny they will never make you feel goosbumps all over your skin as you Ryoma use a new move or Naruto kill a bandit.

excuse me. Batman is the single coolest cat on the block.I think that anime...it's different than American cartoons...bleh how to say this. American cartoons are definitely designed to be funnier? Ed, Edd n Eddy, Tex Avery, WB characters, they all DEFINE cartoons in America. There's also a few deeper COMICS around. The X-Men and Batman and others that are probably deeper make up our spine-chilling, gripping comics.Anime is expressive in television where cartoons are not, so I think that's where anime gets its popularity, no one wants to read comic books to get their action...losers

Urg....Anime is not even comparable to cartoons.Cartoons, in the average sense of the word, are simply animated shows for kids. Anime is a medium, not a genre, meaning that anime covers all age demographics from young children to adult, and all types of genres from school dramas to sci-fi. In Japan, anime consists of over 50% of all of the broadcast TV shows, and in Japanese theatres, anime films have taken the spots for the top 3 highest grossing films for the last 4 years...outside of Asia, anime might be considered just another type of cartoon, but in reality, it is alot more. Therefore...there are good anime, bad anime, and anime of all different kinds of genres, so its not really fair to compare all of anime to "cartoons".

Funny cause I think American cartoons are WAY better than japanese cartoons. But my FAV movie of all time Is Perfect Blue.....but no japanese show (except Sailor Moon and maybe Elfen Lied) can compete with shows like Spongebob, Futurama, Simpsons, and such. Fairy Odd Parents, Xmen, Aeon Flux, Beavis and Butthead, ugh, the list goes on and on......
