The NES saved the gaming industry, but the SNES blew the doors off the gaming industry and really pushed things to the limit. It brought a lot of series to the mainstream market that were previously cult or underground. Final Fantasy 6 (3 on SNES) is a great example as it is arguably the best SNES rpg and best Final Fantasy to date. Prior to that we had FF1 on NES and FF2 (Never heard anyone talk about this game, ever) on SNES. FF6's graphics, music, gameplay and depth of storyline and characters were unrivaled at the time. To this day, that game seems to be the standard of measurement for a lot of console RPGs. Zelda, a Link to the Past is also another great example. Prior to that we had The Legend of Zelda and Zelda II: The Adventure of Link which were both fantastic games themselves, but a Link to the Past raised the bar and you can see the influence it had on it's successors on other consoles. Mario Kart was one of the coolest racing games ever, especially if you got four people playing it. Street Fighter II was a good look into where the fighting game world was going. Secret of Mana, Ogre Battle, Illusion of Gaia, the list goes on.
