I would have to say that ff1 would come in as a close second, cause it was the first final fantasy I ever played. Actually, I think it was the first video game I ever played. The only reason that it didn't come in first was cause there wasn't a lot of help to advance the plot. The first time I played it through, I needed a friend's help cause I ddin't know where to go next.

I definitely liked ff6 the best. Locke was the greatest character ("I'm a TREASURE HUNTER!"), and the opera sequence was amazing for its time (I have a save file just before it, and I downloaded the midi!)
