Zoids - Legacy: Reviews

Game Score: 7/10

Zoids Saga.....ah, the memories this game brings, endless hours of gameplay and zoid collecting. But, although it has some serious strong points, it also has, like any game, weaknesses.

First off there's no real point to collecting all the zoids, figuring out weaknesses, tweaking your pilots to make them more powerful, carefully choosing weapons, and spending hours upgrading every weapon on your chosen Zoid, because, quite simply, you don't need any of this to beat the game. All the best zoids are handed to you on a platter.

For example, one of the feline zoids, a "future" zoid, is just given to you, and it's attacks, even without upgrades, are enough to take down most zoids you find in the game with ease. Now, if you put the main character in the cockpit and use your organoid, or, god forbid, a deck command that makes your organoid twice as strong, and you're practically unbeatable. Hell, the first time through the game i beat the Berserk Fury, supposedly one of the harder bosses, in one hit!

But don't let the difficulty of the game throw you off, the sheer scope and length of the game is dazzling. At least three times during the game i though i had finished it, only to discover that I had hours more gameplay to explore, and even more zoids to discover, but, as I have said before, if you get a good zoid, there's no real reason to get the "zi data" of any more, unless you find a stronger zoid or think that the next one over is a bit prettier.

Even though the battles involve much the same sprites and the same attacks repeatedly, they never get boring. Even once i finished the game, i found myself going back through to just fight more enemies, to see if i could find something worthy of a challenge. Sadly i didn't find anything of the sort, but I did, however, have a lot of fun smooshing evil wild zoids.

Possibly the reason why the game never get's boring is because of the graphics. You might be used to pokemon turn-based fighting, but this game is so much better, you can see every ruby that lances out, watch the chain-link of explosions that wrack the zoids frame when it get's hit, and see scores of missiles impact the ground and frame of the zoid you targeted.

Gameplay is also good, giving you stats and pilot skills and all sorts of variables to play with, though, like i've already said, getting a powerful zoid and just killing everything is much too easy.

The gattai commands were also underused in my opinion, giving you only a few choices from the zoids you want to gattai, and even then, those few zoids that you can gattai seem to be tacked on, merely placed at your disposal because it would be unfair to put a Gattai zoid into the storyline and not let you use it.

Although six vs six zoids sounds exciting, wonderful, and hard as all hell, it isn't. Merely it's just an excuse for you to equip a powerful area-of-affect weapon and nail three or four zoids in one gratifying shot.

Thankfully, the dsigners did think of us people who like a challenge, and gave us a wonderful challenge mode, where every shot counts and a single miss could send you to the ground in a smoking heap, and for every level you complete, you gain new parts and deck commands that can be used in the game.

I've never been one for sound, preffering gameplay, so i don't really know how to rate the sound, there are some nice musical scored, but the gameboy's current sound devices just aren't up to explosions and lasers. It all really depends on your point of view.

All in all, i loved this game. Despite it's faults, despite how easy it is, at it's heart it's an enjoyable romp through a massive world with tons of characters and even more zoids. If you like RPG'S and big robots, explosions, cute anime girls, and, especially, zoids, then this game is most definately for you.
