Pokemon Mystery Dungeon - Red Rescue Team: Reviews

Game Score: 8/10

This game isn't the traditional pokemon game. There are no trainers, and there are no pokeballs.
Controls 10/10: Instead of turn by turn based battles, this game is a sort of dungeon crawler strategy rpg hybrid. It's rather confusing on paper, but when played, it turns out far easier than it sounds. Everything you do within a dungeon takes up one "turn". Now this isnt like fire emblem where an entire turn can change the wave of a battle. These "turns" are a single movement that every pokemon within the dungeon does as soon as you do so. Though it sounds time consuming, it is instantaneous and well executed.
Gameplay: 7/10
Now heres where Pokemon Mystery Dungeon takes a dip. Though it could be a fresh start the moment you begin to play, the dungeon crawling becomes overly repetitive. Every single dungeon is literally just a scenery swap of the last. Maybe theres some false passages and dead ends thrown in here or there, and maybe some pokemon switch around, but it never radically changes. For the entire game, you're left with the feeling that you yourself is lost in this dungeon, when you're supposed to be the rescue team. The dungeons are overly repetitive, the amount of moves are watered down, and the general effects of moves are similar to the dungeons; pallette swabs with the same effects.
Music: 7/10
There really isnt any music in this game. Save for the occasional touching scene and boss battle, the only music you will hear is the tune inside the town. The dungeons are basically incomprehensable noises with no real tune. In past pokemon games, caves had catchy mysterious tunes. In Mystery dungeon, the dungeon music sounds just like random sequences of notes echoing about. Maybe they wanted to give the feel of mystery and unknown with the random notes, but I didn't feel it.
Storyline: 9/10
This game was roughly based on the comic book counterpart of Pokemon Mystery Dungeon. You begin as a human who has been transformed into a pokemon. I can't properly explain why I gave the story a 9 instead of a 10 without spoiling it, so I'll just say that the ending leaves quite a few questions unexplained that the comic book answered. Otherwise, the story is engaging and worth the mundane dungeoning.
Replay: 10/10
After the credits roll, numerous options are unlocked, such as evolution and legendary pokemon. Though I did not want to go through more monotoneous dungeons to recruit legendary pokemon for my team, I'm sure someone does.

Pokemon Mystery Dungeon was a brave soul. It took the original turn by turn RPG and tried something completely new. Though I'm glad that it did, their execution could have been better, and the gameplay a bit less repetitive. The game had its ups and downs, so I think it is fitting of an overall score of 8/10
