Introduction:
What is Super Robot Wars? Basically it's a game that features robots from different anime fighting together. Banpresto has released a lot of SRW games but so far, only two have been imported to the USA. This game is one of those two.
Graphics: 8/10
Despite the limitations of the GBA, the graphics of this game are quite excellent. The environment looks much better and is much more detailed than its prequel IMO. The robots' attacks look much more realistic and their sprites have improved somewhat. Also, a lot of characters recieved a cut-in animation, where in the game shows their faces right before they do an attack.
Sound: 9/10
This is one game that will probably make you want to listen to the BGMs for hours. The music of the game is excellent and often fits the mood of the situation. The game characters have a number of BGMs that will easily hook you, so why not give this category a 10/10? The reason is simple. Only a few characters have special BGMs which are the only ones that are really great. Also, most of those few characters are bosses so you can only listen to their BGMs during specific scenarios. Aside from these reasons, the majority of the BGMs for the characters in this game seem too generic and redundant hence the 9/10 score.
Gameplay: 10/10
SRW:OG 2's gameplay system uses the classic turn-based combat SRPG-style, much like the Fire Emblem and Advance Wars series. With that said, the environment is also a factor for deciding an outcome of a battle since it offers bonuses like defense and dodge increase and HP and EN regeneration.
The robots themselves are unique in that they differ in the environment they specialize in. Some of them are more suited for aerial combat, while others perform much better in the ground than in the sky.
This game has also implemented the combo system, where one mech can damage and potentially kill multiple enemies with one attack. The downside to this is that your enemies have to be in a straight line and your mech must possess a combo weapon, not to mention that the pilot for that mech must also have the combo skill learned.
Like all the other SRW games, you can perform a combination attack, where two robots would attack the same enemy for more damage.
The game offers a great feel of customization. You can choose to customize either your robot's stats so it can survive longer in battle or it's weapons, so it can dish out more damage. Every robot in this game also has a Full Upgrade Bonus, where it'll get further increases to it's stats or gain some new ability once you fully max out every upgrade cap a robot has.
This game also offers a wide variety of equipable weapons and parts for you to be able to customize your favorite mechs further. The number of weapons and parts you can equip to a mech depends on how powerful it is though.
With the mechs out of the way, it's time to move on to the pilots. Like the mechs, pilots can also be customized. You choose which skills they learn and it's also up to you to decide which of their stats should be increased. Unlike the mechs however, pilots can't be upgraded using money, they use PP or Pilot Points, which they earn in battle, to be upgraded instead.
Your pilots also have something called SP or Spirit Points which they use to cast spells on themselves or on an ally to help them greatly in battle.
Since there is a great deal of customization in this game, it's obvious that money is very important. You're going to need it to survive the tougher bosses of this game.
And speaking of bosses...
This game has a ton of bosses that will really tear you apart if you're not fully prepared. All of the major bosses here have some mean attacks that'll one-hit KO you if it hits. To make matters worse, all of the major bosses have 100K+ HP where as you only have a measly 10K+ HP, assuming you fully upgraded your robot. If that isn't hard enough for you, about half of the bosses can regenerate their HP every turn. Utilizing your most powerful attacks is the key to defeating these bosses though that's easier said than done.
Depending on how well you do missions, the difficulty of the game either increases or decreases. And that's it for the gameplay part of the review.
Story: 8/10
The story starts off with a mysterious woman fighting several enemy mechs. The main character and his team saves her and the rest of the plot unfolds from that point.
Ignoring the brief introduction of the game's story above, the plot is similar to the first game in that you also fight aliens. However, the plot is good enough to the point you want to find out what happens next.
Replayability: 10/10
Once you finish the game, you can start a new game using your old savefile. Doing this gives you benefits like getting to keep you pilots' leftover PPs from the previous game and keeping any unspent money.
EX-hard mode also unlocks once you've finished the game once. In this mode, enemies are a lot harder and you are not allowed to upgrade your weapons. There is also a special mode that is unlocked after you beat EX-hard mode. Aside from these, the game has a few secret mechs available so replaying the game to get them isn't a bad idea.
Overall: 10/10
Definitely a 10 if you're a fan of the SRW series, but 9 otherwise. On a side note, this game is considered to be the hardest game of the SRW series and you might want to play the game's prequel first to get to know the characters better but despite these, SRW:OG 2 is a fantastic game that's certainly worth your time.
