Yggdra Union - We'll Never Fight Alone: Reviews

Game Score: 9/10

Yggdra Union tells the story of Princess Yggdra, who's land had been taken over by the Bronquian Empire. She flees with the Holy Sword Gran Centurio with hopes of reclaiming her lost land. Yggdra comes across a band of thieves whose hideout had been destroyed (which was actually her fault). She then tells them of her plight and offers her castle if they assist her in reclaiming her land.

The story focuses mainly on Yggdra's crusade to reclaim her kingdom from the Bronquian Empire and uniting the rest of the world under her flag. Yggdra believes that justice lies with the Holy Sword, and therefore believes it is okay to kill with it for the good of her kingdom and therefore justifies her actions. The ending is based on your actions, with two good endings and one bad ending.

All in all, the plot is interesting (though hard to keep up with at times) and will keep you playing.

The battle system is similar to that of Fire-Emblem, but more complex and rewarding. You move your characters around the map, and when you are close enough to an enemy you have the option to begin a clash. Clashes are shown in a 2-D style where your characters are more detailed and (of course) fight the enemy. You cannot control them directly, but you can order them to take it easy (which builds up a meter) or fight aggressively (which drains the meter). The loser of a clash loses morale, and when it runs out they die. Later in the game the player is able to position his/her characters to form multiple clashes in a row. Its a very well done system and one of the best I've seen for a strategy game.

Before each battle you pick a certain number of cards, and use them to move around during the actual battle. So, if your card had the number 7 on it you could only move 7 squares, and this is for ALL OF YOUR CHARACTERS. You are not able to move them all individually by 7 squares, if the total number of squares moved for all characters adds up to 7 then you cannot move any more. When you run out of cards you automatically lose the battle.

Cards also have different abilities that you can use mid-clash and can change the tide of the battle. If you win a clash then the card you have on will advance in stats depending on how well you performed.

The audio in the game is excellent. Each character has his or her own theme that plays during clashes, and it slows or speeds up depending on your fighting style. The full soundtrack equals to almost 60 songs. wow.

The gameplay is excellent, but I noticed that the world isn't all that deep. You go from battlefield to battlefield, but it seems kind of transparent. It's like there's this massive world for you to explore but you have to do it with a blindfold or something. What I'm saying is that this feels like you're being dragged along for the ride. I just wish you were able to interact a little more with the world.

Is the game hard? I'd say it is. Characters do not regain morale after each battle so it can get a little difficult to keep your characters alive. Did I like this game? I loved it. The strategy, combat system and storyline all add up to make an amazing game. I'd say this game is definitely worth your time.
