Petz - Hamsterz Life 2: Reviews

Game Score: 8/10

INTRODUCTION:
Hamsterz Life 2 has recently been released for the GBA. As of today, it has also become available on DGEmu. I finally got a change to play it myself, and it is an adequate pet sim with average gameplay and above-average cartoon-style graphics. I've noticed Hamsterz Life 2 has been getting a very bad rap from other gamers here so far, and I wanted to set the record straight so that future gamers will understand what they're getting when they go to play this pet sim.

GRAPHICS:
Firstly, the graphics in this game are very nice. There's a heavy anime influence, as seen when you choose your hamster, and converse with kids at school, etc. The in-game graphics where you care for your hamster are a bit more reminiscent of traditional cartoon-style graphics. I think the reason why people are rating this game so low is because they're expecting something very realistic à la Pocket Dogs. Both the box art and title screen for Hamsterz Life 2 can be quite misleading about the style of the game's graphics. However, once you understand that you're getting something very nice and cartoonish, you're in for lots of enjoyment if you love pet sims.

GAMEPLAY:
Most of the gameplay in Hamsterz Life 2 is average for a pet sim. There are standard actions available such as grooming, cleaning, petting, etc. However, one aspect of the gameplay is quite clunky and confusing: You can choose to pick your hamster up and take it to school with you, but the game is not clear on how to do so. Once you pick up your hamster, you are not told how you can take him or her to school. So, to understand several gameplay aspects, you're going to need your game manual handy (which I don't have right now).

SOUND:
The sound is very good. It's nothing distracting, but it's good enough to fit the cheery, cute style of the game.

Final Score: 8 out of 10. Once you understand you're playing a cartoonish pet sim, you'll have a great time. Remember to have your manual handy on how to take your new pet to school or enter him or her into contests.
