Harry Potter Collection: Reviews

Game Score: 6/10

There used to be a saying that "less is more". Well this big gaming shabang went in the complete opposite direction. The Harry Potter "Collection" only includes the first three installments. All of them are below average.

Gameplay 5/10: The first and second games are completely atrocious. The character movement is stiff and unresponsive, your spells are near impossible to switch on the fly, and the fact that pressing up on the direction pad makes you walk diagonally slightly to the right makes dodging enemies impossible, especially since random barrels and armored fiends come at you at any given time at extremely fast paces with little to no reaction time for you to dodge. The third game is somewhat decent, and goes in the direction of an RPG. Though this one is playable compared to 1 and 2, it is completely unoriginal. You can tell that the battle system was ripped directly off of golden sun, only with much less content. The story barely follows the book, and since there really wasn't any real battle in the book, much improvization was used. The last boss... I could not begin to understand how utterly random it was.

Sound 6/10: Terrible as well. The music in the first and second, like their gameplay, was identical. Everywhere you went, the same music droned on and on. The third one, again, proved to be somewhat better, but it can't make up for all of 1 and 2 's faults.

Story 6/10: There were too many randomly assigned activities in every game. For some of them, there were just series of cutscenes to fill in the story and irrelevant missions for the gameplay. Without having read the books or seen the movie, you would be completely lost.

Harry Potter is likely the most popular book in the world, but playing these games would never let you know. To someone who just came out of a cave, this game would just be another sad attempt to convert a movie to an easy money maker. I thought that the games would be somewhat decent, having played the Gameboy Color versions and loved the effort put into them. The "advance" of the harry potter series to gameboy advance was really a demotion.
