Samurai Deeper Kyo: Reviews

Game Score: 5/10
Based on the anime series with the same name, this is a hack-and-slash game all squeezed into the digital cartridge of a GameBoy Advance. Which is both good and bad.
The Good:
It's sorta kinda true to the series. Although a bonus here is that you can get to choose from different characters aside from Kyo. There are also unlockables (hidden characters and weapons). These two aspects alone prolong the gaming life, making you play more than once just to get all the neat stuff this game has to offer.
Controls are easy to learn. It doesn't involve any button-mashing combos, just plain button mashing (my thumb got sore from hitting the attack button a bajillion times). Special attacks are just a press of a button away (at least when your gauge is full). Anybody can play this game.
No mind-numbing puzzle solving. All plain action (with some storyline cutscenes and dialogs in between for you to rest that thumb). The only decisions you have to make is which paths to take (which is still easy enough 'coz you still end up where you should be).
The Bad:
Cutscenes and dialogs are kinda long and dragging. I found myself hitting the button to skip a buncha dialogs just to get back to the action.
Graphics... well, lemme just say that it's the GBA - but unfortunately, the game underutilizes whatever graphic power the GBA has. Ditto with sound and music.
Enemies don't have much variety in them. Once halfway through the game you'll see all there is to see in terms of the cannon fodder thrown at you. Only the bosses are the redeeming factor here. Same is true with executing the special attack. The short cutscene before the special attack can be pretty boring after a few hundred times.
Overall, it is a mindless hack-and-slash game which can appeal to anyone who doesn't have the time or patience to think through a game (getting 2000+ kills can be pretty satisfying for the bloodlust). Going through more than once to get all the unlockables may not be that appealing for those who are not fans of the anime series.
