Pocket Bomberman: Reviews

Back in the '80's, fledgeling company Hudson Soft released a game called Bomberman for the PC, which was barely popular enough to warrant a few ports (most famously to the NES, where many falsely believe it originated) and and a sequel. With every sequel the series grew in popularity in both Japan and the US. The idea is that you walk around a maze and blow each other with bombs of varius T-shaped blast radei.
But hold on, Pocket Bomberman isn't a return to those days or even an improvement. An example would be how the US Bomberman 64 (Baku Bomberman) would be to the Japanese arcade edition of Bombermn 64 is similar to this game in comparison to Bomberman GB. Pocket Bomberman has two games, normal and jump, they are both sidescrolling and singleplayer. Everyone who ever played a Bomberman game will know multiplayer is its greatest aspect.
Normal Game has you jumping around platforms and blasting things to bits. All of the items are back, which is a good plus. The sad thing is, it has its heart in the right place, all of the trapping techniques and even how the levels progress are reminiscent of the series' addictive history.
Jump Game has Bomberman jump automatically through levels that encourage this type of gameplay. This game sadly loses almost all of the great parts of Bomberman, for example, enemies are floating so trapping is useless.
Neither of these modes are bad per se, but all of its good parts are overshadowed by your memories and the colliding of two gameplay elements that just don't mix. If you want a bomberman game for the Gameboy, do yourself a favor and try Bomberman GB.
