Warioland 2: Reviews

Game Score: 9/10

A few years after settling down in his new castle, Wario's old nemesis, Captain Syrup is back to claim her loot. She send her pirates to wreak havocs into Wario's castle and steal his (stolen) money. And so begin Wario's second epic gameboy title, Wario Land II.

Overall Score: 9/10

if you loved the first Wario Land, this game is DEFINITLY worth your money/download points and time. The designers retained all the great coin collecting, tackling, ground pounding, jumping and exploring fun from the first title and added a hell of a lot of content to make a game at least 3 times as big as its predecesor. Overall, I'd say nothing is lost here from the first game, Wario Land II is almost only better.

Gameplay&Control: 9/10

Wario's platformers are a little bit more puzzle-oriented than Mario's, so the jumping control isn't as sensitive as in a Mario game. But it's still a very interesting one. Let's start with one of the new main additions in WL2, to say it bluntly, you can't die. is this a good or bad thing? I'm not sure. instead of losing a life when you make a bad move, you often lose time. When a foe touch you, you lose some coins and get pushed back or stoped in your jump, usualy this lead to falling down a serie of platforms and having to start a section of the stage over again. I'll leave it up to you to decide if you like this system or not.

Another new addition that kinda go hand in hand with this: The transformation. When Wario get hit by some particular enemies, he will be tempararly under some kind of ''status effect''. Those are usualy used to gain access to optional areas, maybe containing coins or other valuables. Those puzzles are usualy kinda obvious however, and take more patience than skill to solve...

Now for more basic Wario Land elements. There are still a lot of hidden money in the stages, they are usualy hidden in secret areas that are completely optional. You carry your loot from level to level and use it in mini games, or just to satisfy your treasure-hoarding need by looking at that 5 digit coin count.
Each stage contain one hidden treasure, this time, unlike in Wario Land 1, you only need to find the door that lead to the treasure room and you're done... well almost. As you enter the door, a simple quick-eyes card game will start, if you beat this mini game, the treasure is yours. You can pay extra money from your pockets to make the game easier and have more chances to success. Likewise, there is another mini game at the end of each stage that let you collect a piece of map, needed to beat the game 100%. This game also cost you money to be made easier.

Some levels also have secret exits, some even lead to secret endings. Those are no big deal I'd say, but it's always a nice touch.

Graphics: 7/10

Slightly above average GBC graphics. The colors are nice and easy on the eyes, but nothing that will ''WOW'' you. The animations are nicely done, Wario is funny, sympatic and caricature-ish.

Music&Sound: 7/10

The music suit the mood of the game, Nintendo are usualy good with that. The music isn't exceptional, but usualy feel just right. I'd say the sound is sub-par however, some sound effects might end up being annoying, like that ''blehwheehehweh'' when you get knocked by an enemy and lose some coins, also having to restart a part of a level for the 50th time.

Pros&Cons:

Pros:

- A LOT of secrets. This is a good platform-exploring game with a lot of content.

Cons:

- Can get frustrating. Some levels have cheap, annoying parts that might require a lot of patience, needing you to retry many times.

A really GREAT game, but not without flaws sadly. it would have been better without the whole ''you can't die'' thing in my opinion. But even then, give it a try, if you loved Wario Land, or WL3 or 4, you'll certainly like this one. if you like the serie, this game is a gem among the others.
